Primary Purpose

Serves as a lead in preparing operating rooms for surgery, providing technical services, assisting during complex surgeries, and maintaining documentation to ensure activities meet operating room, and Parkland requirements.

Certification/Registration/Licensure

• Requirements for Practicing Surgical Technology in the State of Texas (per Texas H.B. 643-Chapter 259): Education/Certification:

• Has successfully completed an accredited educational program for surgical technologists and holds and maintains certification as a surgical technologist by:

  • The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or its successor;
  • The National Center for Competency Testing or its successor;
  • Another surgical technologist certification program approved by the department; OR

• Has completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service.

• Must have current healthcare provider CPR course completion card from one of the following:

  • American Heart Association
  • American Red Cross Rescuer
  • Military Training Network.
Skills or Special Abilities
  • Must demonstrate a basic working knowledge of surgical equipment, instruments, and procedures.
  • Must be able to set priorities and perform under stressful situations.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge and use of aseptic techniques and recognize and correct breaks in aseptic technique immediately.
  • Must communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Must work flexible hours and shifts as required.
  • Must effectively communicate with hospital staff.
  • Must demonstrate patient-centered behaviors.
Responsibilities
  1. Assist the surgical team during procedures, functioning as a scrub role, ensuring activities meet team needs.
  2. Prepare rooms with instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment; clean rooms or equipment as necessary, practicing aseptic techniques.
  3. Serve as a resource for Surgical Technologist I & II, answering questions and assisting with complex situations.
  4. Accurately communicate patient data to team members and management to ensure safe patient care.
  5. Participate in multidisciplinary care planning and assist the Nurse Coordinator with service-specific needs.
  6. Maintain positive relationships with patients, staff, visitors, and physicians to ensure comfort and safety.
  7. Identify work process improvements and enhance customer satisfaction, making recommendations and implementing as appropriate.
  8. Provide training and orientation to new employees and students.
  9. Stay updated on developments in Surgical Technology by attending training, seminars, and reading journals; incorporate new knowledge into practice.
Job Accountabilities
  1. Identify and implement work process improvements to support department and organizational goals.
  2. Stay current with industry advancements, maintaining certification and integrating new knowledge into practice.
  3. Ensure adherence to applicable laws, regulations, and guidelines, developing internal controls as needed.
