Job summary

Pain Physicians of Wisconsin is seeking a Surgical Technologist to support the operating room team in the ambulatory surgery center. The role emphasizes sterile technique, site preparation, instrument handling and team collaboration.

The successful candidate will assist with operating room setup, gowning, gloving, patient prep, and maintaining sterile fields, while supporting aseptic standards and universal protocol. BLS certification within three months is preferred.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent and completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program.
  • At least 5 years of related experience preferred.
  • Demonstrates leadership, organization, and teamwork in the OR.

Position Summary

The primary purpose of the position of Surgical Technologist (also called surg techs), is to assist the physician in the operating room. In addition, the surgical technologist is responsible for the sterilization of the equipment and tools, the preparation of the surgical site of the patient, maintaining the sterile field and helping the OR team understand and maintain aseptic technique and the sterile field.

  • Dons OR attire and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Gathers, checks, and opens supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure.
  • Sets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure, respecting, and maintaining sterile field.
  • Assists the team members with gowning and gloving.
  • Performs surgical skin prep, drapes the patient and establishes the sterile field.
  • Actively participates in the Universal Protocol/Time out procedure to verify surgical site and patient verification using two patient identifiers.
  • Secures tubing, cords, and other sterile accessories.
  • Prepares and anticipates additional instrumentation, equipment and supplies for use during the procedure.
  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure.
  • Measures and passes medications and solutions utilized during the surgical procedure.
  • Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.
  • Sponges or suctions the operative site.
  • Applies electrocautery to clamps or forceps on bleeders.
  • Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon.
  • Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
  • Performs additional counts as necessary.
  • Prepares sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices.
  • Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
  • Leads other members of the team with terminal cleaning of room.
  • Assists in prepping the OR for the next patient.
  • Participates in Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement activities as a member of the team.
  • Assists in keeping the ASC clean, neat and orderly following appropriate cleaning protocols, using correct disinfectant and while wearing appropriate PPE.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program.
  • At least 5 years of related experience preferred.
  • Ability to educate and lead the team to understanding and adherence to requirements of appropriate OR attire, respect of the sterile field, skin antisepsis, appropriate sterile reprocessing.
  • Strong organizational, communication and analytical skills. Demonstrates excellent judgment, sometimes while under pressure.
  • Ability to multi-task and effectively prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Professional, pleasant, and compassionate behavior towards patients, families, physicians, staff, vendors, organizational leadership and general public.
  • Ability to promote favorable organization image to patients, families, physicians, staff, vendors, organizational leadership and general public.
  • Ability to work independently, make decisions, solve problems, and understand when to ask for help.
  • Evidence of leadership qualities. Consistently contributes to the improvement of the Ambulatory Surgery Center and the organization. Participates willingly and effectively in meetings and in ASC projects.
  • Provides excellent customer service and contributes to a positive team environment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Licenses & Certifications
  • Current certification as CST and/or CFSA preferred.
  • BLS certified or to obtain BLS certification within three months of hire.
