The Surgical Technologist plays a vital role in the operating room, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality care during surgical procedures. If you're looking for a role that values expertise and professional development, we encourage you to apply!

Responsibilities:

• Ensure all medications are labeled and handed to surgeon according to established policies and procedures.
• Before an operation, help to prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions. Assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment. Adjust and check equipment to ensure it is working properly.
• During surgery, efficiently pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgeon assistants. Hold retractors or instruments, cut sutures, sponge or suction the operative site under the supervision of the surgeon and help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.
• Assist in the preparation, care for, and disposal of specimens taken for laboratory analysis and helps apply dressings.
• Assist the surgical team with putting on sterile gowns and gloves.
• After surgery, may help transfer patients to the recovery room. Clean and restock the operating room.
• Prepare patients for surgery by wash, shave, and ensure aseptic incision sites. May transport patients to the operating room, help position them on the operating table and cover them with sterile surgical drapes.
• Ensure clean, safe environment through continued alertness to safety and explosive hazards and aseptic technique.
  
  

Pennsylvania House Bill 81 (Effective 12/27/2020):

Surgical technologists must meet one of the following:

• Completed an accredited program and maintain certification
• Completed an appropriate military training program
• Maintain certification from an accredited program
• Were employed as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility on or before 12/27/2020
• Were employed as a surgical technologist in another healthcare facility at any point in the two years prior to 12/27/2020
  
  

Continuing Education:

• Certified individuals must comply with their credentialing organization's requirements
• Non-certified individuals must complete 30 hours of continuing education every two years
  
  

Specialty Experience:

Includes general, orthopedic, vascular, plastic/reconstructive, OB-GYN, thoracic, ophthalmic, neurosurgery, organ procurement, and endoscopic surgery. Medication access is limited to distribution to nurses.

Grandfathering Clause:

• Surgical technologists employed by a healthcare facility before 12/27/2020 or in another facility in the prior two years do not require certification
• New graduates of an accredited program can work for six months post-graduation but must be certified within that timeframe
• We are not considering new grads at this time for our team.
  

Licensure & Certifications:

• CPR/BLS (American Heart Association standards) within 30 days of hire
• CST or TSC Certification within six months of program completion (exception for facilities unable to recruit certified personnel, with documented efforts)
• Clearances: Act 31 Child Abuse, Act 33, Act 34, Act 73 FBI Clearance (all require renewal)
