Responsibilities

  • Assists physicians as a sterile member of the operating room team.
  • Maintains an aseptic environment for each surgical patient.
  • Prepares instruments and supplies for procedures.
  • Scrubs on all types of surgery cases as needed.
  • Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality and supports a positive patient-care environment.
  • Assists in orientation and training of new staff as a preceptor.

Job description

Description

We are seeking a skilled Surgical Technologist to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting in the sterile environment of the operating room by helping the circulating nurse, surgeon, and procedures. The surgical technologist will also maintain minimum stock levels to meet the needs driven by case volume and achieve optimum performance in the operating room. Your responsibilities will include the following:

  • Assists physicians as a sterile member of the operating room team.
  • Maintains awareness to prevent surgical harm or injury to the patients.
  • Exhibits interest in surgical procedures.
  • Prepares medication under the supervision of the circulating nurse in charge of the case.
  • Set priorities for action based on problem-solving processes, common sense, and meeting patient care priorities.
  • Utilized work assignments to develop the special abilities of individuals and meet the unique needs of patients/significant others.
  • Maintains proper body mechanics while turning, lifting, bending, stretching, walking, and standing.
  • Performs duties designated by the Pain Medicine Clinical Services Director or charge nurse.
  • Establishes and maintains an aseptic environment for each surgical patient.
  • Demonstrates a consistently high degree of accuracy in the accomplishments of daily activities.
  • Possesses knowledge of surgical procedures.
  • Possesses a working knowledge of equipment used in the operating room.
  • Assists professional nursing staff by scrubbing on all types of surgery cases.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and quiet environment for patients and other personnel.
  • Recognizes potential benefits of selected new products and discusses possible acquisition for use with the Clinical Services Director.
  • Serves as a preceptor in the orientation of new employees.
  • Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality while ensuring their dignity is respected.
  • Participates in providing and presenting educational instruction on existing and newly acquired equipment and instruments.
  • Cost-effectively maintains adequate supplies and equipment in appropriate working conditions.
  • Maintains quality of surgical instruments through proper maintenance, cleaning, lubricating, sterilization, utilization, and storage according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Maintains a clean, safe environment for processing sterile supplies.
  • Responsible for decontamination procedure on all instruments and equipment.
  • Report damaged instruments to the Pain Management Clinical Services Director and follow the proper procedure for damaged instruments and equipment.
  • Completes appropriate competency checklists annually.
  • Maintains a positive and professional attitude and works cooperatively and effectively with all healthcare team members.
  • Communicates change and implements change cooperatively.
  • Communicates courteously and professionally with physicians, unit personnel, and other departments.
  • Discuss problems or complaints with the Pain Management Clinical Services Director, following the proper chain of command.
  • Identifies when coworkers need assistance and cooperates willingly in completing heavy work assignments.
  • Identifies needs for change and contributes possible solutions to implement change to the Surgical Services Director.
  • Seeks ways to improve learning experiences for unit personnel and new employees.
  • Assists in all perioperative areas as needed.
  • Assure cases and rooms are prepared for the next day's surgeries.

Requirements

Education: A graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program and/or acquired knowledge of surgical instrumentation and sterile technique is preferred.

Experience: Two (2) years of experience in a hospital or medical setting is preferred.

Licenses/Certificates: Current certification from LCC-ST (Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist) is preferred. Current BLS certification is required.

Special Skill: Strong attention to detail and ability to work well as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
