General Summary of Position
Performs a variety of technical duties to assist with surgery. Provides expert services in at least one specialty area. Assists with precepting of staff and students.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Anticipates sequential needs of the surgeon/physician during the procedure.
- Assists with case preparation following preference card guidelines.
- Collaborates with Resource Nurse and Perioperative Educator on the development and provision of competency-based orientation. Precepts staff and students.
- Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
- Ensures that equipment is functioning properly. Immediately identifies and troubleshoots equipment problems within specialty area and/or notifies appropriate personnel.
- Functions as a technical resource person by providing information relating to instruments and equipment and assists in planning and maintenance of the equipment particularly in area of expertise.
- Functions as assistant during procedures performing specified activities under the direct supervision of the surgeon/physician.
- Identifies and handles specimens appropriately.
- In conjunction with other team members may provide one in-service per year in related specialty area.
- Maintains aseptic techniques; actively monitors situations that could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.
- Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts as required. Serves as a contributing member on unit-based committees.
- Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
- Performs indirect patient care activities such as patient transportation as needed.
- Provides comfort and support for patients by demonstrating sensitivity to patient's care and privacy.
- Responds to questions from patient families and significant others in a prompt courteous positive and knowledgeable manner and/or refers to appropriate personnel.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Graduation from a school of surgical technology or hospital-based program required.
- One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.
Experience
- 1-2 years Surgical technologist experience required.
- One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.
Licenses and Certifications
- Must maintain 6 Continuing Education Credits per year within 180 days required.
- CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 days required.
- Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
- CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) certification preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Competency in case procedure preparation and completion in all services.
- Expert in at least one specialty surgical service.
- Verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic computer skills preferred.
Salary
USD $29.73 – USD $53.49 /hr.
