Job Summary

  • Under the guidance of the Registered Nurse, the Operating Room Surgical Technician is responsible for assisting with the preparation of surgical patients by performing routine and delegated duties according to standards and policies of the Operating Room and the Hospital.

Responsibilities

  • Patient Care
    • Follow standard procedures for surgical intervention assisting in accordance with the preferences of the Surgeon and Anesthesiologist.
    • Complete assignments timely and satisfactorily with minimal assistance or direction.
    • Interact with team members to establish priorities for assigned tasks.
    • Ensure all necessary equipment is available prior to the start of procedures.
    • Report unsafe conditions promptly.
    • Apply and monitor principles of aseptic technique throughout the intra-operative period. Research new ideas related to surgical technology and provide in-service training to peers.
    • Assist with positioning patients to protect skin integrity.
    • Report relevant observations of the patient's response to the Surgical Team.
    • Perform sponge, needle, and instrument counts accurately according to policy and procedure.
    • Handle and collect specimens according to hospital policy.
    • Assist and anticipate the needs of the surgical team for instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies.
    • Demonstrate composure in stressful situations and respond appropriately in emergencies.
  • Preparation and sterilization practices and techniques
    • Follow prescribed procedures in preparing and assembling reusable instrument sets and equipment.
    • Identify unassembled components of each surgical instrument tray, inspecting for defects to ensure proper working order.
    • Maintain knowledge of specialized equipment used in the Operating Room.
  • Materials Management, Distribution/Storage
    • Use supplies judiciously to observe cost containment practices.
    • Provide input in evaluating new products.
    • Assist in maintaining inventory and ordering supplies.
    • Stock sterile goods appropriately.
    • Check supplies for expiration dates and packaging integrity.
  • Other
    • Guide and direct support personnel. Maintain an appropriate skills check-off list for employee orientation and provide feedback to the Nurse Manager regarding performance.
    • Take professional accountability for performance. Assist others as needed, offer to take additional call, and report problems to the coordinator/manager/designee, following through as directed.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Experience
    • Minimum of one year OR experience preferred or recent graduate of an accredited Surgical Technical School.
  • Education
    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Member of AST preferred.
  • Licenses/Certifications
    • BLS required.
    • CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) required.
