Job summary

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a Surgical Technician to support the surgical team during procedures at the Texas facilities. The role involves preparing instruments, maintaining a sterile field, and assisting with specimen preparation and instrument counts.

Strong knowledge of aseptic technique, infection control, and instrument handling is required. The position includes varied shifts with rotating call and a focus on teamwork and patient safety.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of aseptic technique and infection control policies.
• Ability to prepare and protect the sterile field during surgery.
• Familiarity with instruments, equipment, and post-procedure decontamination.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy and complex procedures to anticipate surgeon needs.
• Prepares instruments for full range of surgical procedures.
• Sets up for the procedure and handles instrumentation.
• Prepares pathological specimens for testing (permanent, fresh, frozen, cultures).
• Performs instrument counts (counts of sharps and sponges) per policy.
• Participates in patient identification and surgical site verification using Universal Protocol and Time-Outs.
• Assists in planning and preparing procedures with proper equipment and supplies.
• Participates in in-service programs for surgical care.
• Coordinates with Environmental Management for cleaning after procedures and educates staff on sanitation and PPE.
• Follows infection control policies and PPE guidelines.
• Reads SOPs and prepares for high-level disinfection of reusable equipment.
• Pre-cleaning of instrumentation and preparation of sets and case carts.
