Surgical Technician I – Beth Israel Lahey Health

Job Summary

The Surgical Technician I is a certified and educated professional who performs surgical technology services that contribute to safe, quality, and fiscally responsible patient care. This novice role practices under maximum guidance and direction, progressing from orientation toward an advanced beginner level and consistently requiring assistance from a preceptor. The Technician supports a wide range of surgical procedures across the East Campus OR, including Gynecology, General, Urology, Robotics, Oncology, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Plastic, and Interventional Pulmonology.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the circulating nurse pre‑operatively to prepare the operating room and ensure all supplies, instruments, and equipment are ready and sterile.
  • Maintain a sterile field using aseptic technique and verify that all surgical equipment operates safely.
  • Support the intraoperative team by anticipating and responding to needs, monitoring the sterile field, and providing required instruments and supplies.
  • Execute tasks at the sterile field as directed, including passing supplies, sponge or suctioning operative sites, preparing and cutting suture material, irrigating with fluids, handling specimens, and assisting with instrument counts.
  • Recognize, intervene, and report any situations that impede patient safety, and safeguard patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Facilitate efficient turnover by prioritizing activities related to equipment and instruments needed for subsequent cases, and report problems with kits or supplies.
Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS). Completion of a surgical technologist certification (CST) within one year of hire.
  • 0–1 year related work experience.
  • Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist education program or completed a U.S. Military or Public Health Service training program.
  • Hold and maintain a nationally recognized surgical technologist credential.
  • Basic computer literacy and ability to navigate web‑based applications.

Physical Nature of the Job

Medium work: Exert up to 50 pounds occasionally or up to 20 pounds frequently. Requires standing and moving throughout the shift.

Pay Range

$36.50 – $54.24 per hour (base hourly wage). Compensation may exceed this range based on seniority, education, experience, certifications, location, shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime, and other lawful factors.
