Job summary

Island Health in Anacortes, WA is seeking a Surgical Technician to assist surgeons during operative procedures and ensure the sterile environment and instrument readiness. The role supports the surgical team through room turnover, asepsis, and instrument handling, enabling safe, efficient procedures.

The ideal candidate holds a Surgical Technician Certificate, Washington registration, and a current BLS certificate, with at least 6 months of relevant experience, and demonstrates strong teamwork

Qualifications

  • Surgical Technician Certificate from an accredited program.
  • Current Washington State Surgical Technologist Registration.
  • Current Basic Life Support Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Provides patient explanations and verbal reassurance as needed.
  • Prepares operating room with anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment.
  • Assists in positioning, prepping, and draping patients for procedures.
  • Anticipates surgeon needs and assists with instruments during intraoperative phase.
  • Maintains sterile technique and asepsis throughout treatments/procedures.
  • Cleans and restocks rooms between cases and participates in end-of-case cleanup.

Salary Range: $31.07 – $46.15 per hour

  • Night Differential - $2.25
  • Evening Differential - $1.65
  • Weekend Differential - $1.50

In the Surgical Technician role, you will play a key role in assisting the surgeon during operative and invasive procedures; assures operating suite is adequately prepared for procedure; monitors PAR level of all surgical instruments and supplies; assists in room turnovers and participates in departmental staff meetings and performance improvement activities.

What you will be doing:

  • Provides patient with explanations and verbal reassurance if necessary.
  • Adapts procedures to meet individual needs for patients of all ages.
  • Prepares room in a timely manner with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment for each individual surgical procedure.
  • Assists in positioning, prepping, and draping of patients for surgical procedures.
  • Anticipates needs of surgeons during intraoperative phase; including but not limited to: preparing passing instruments and sutures to the surgeon, assisting with lenses and scopes, exposing operative sites using correct instrumentation and assisting with the application of postoperative wound dressings under the direction and supervision of the surgeon.
  • Accurately completes operating room counts (instruments, sponges, needles, etc.) and follows proper procedure in case of incorrect count, reports all discrepancies to circulating nurse and surgeon immediately.
  • Carries out medical/surgical asepsis during treatments/procedures.
  • Checks all equipment/instruments needed prior to each procedure to ensure correct functioning.
  • Follows aseptic technique when opening sterile supplies and setting up procedures.
  • Scrubs for all procedures performed in Surgical Services Department.
  • Sets up, scrubs and prepares for procedures at least 15 minutes prior to scheduled time, unless otherwise directed by circulating nurse or Surgery department director.
  • Maintains an orderly and sterile instrument table for the purpose of efficiency; follows department standard set-up.
  • Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures and after last case, restocks supplies when necessary and organizes effectively for end-of-case cleanup.
  • Responsible for the care of instruments, equipment during intra/postoperative phase, including cleaning and processing of instruments.
  • Follows written procedure for steam sterilization, knows responsibilities and the necessity for chemical and biological monitoring.
  • Consults with other staff members when in question or unfamiliar with equipment or procedure.
  • Regularly collaborates with other members of the nursing team in order to maintain equipment and supplies for surgical procedures, and cases throughout the day. Anticipating needs and availability of future cases.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to interact positively with Administration, Directors, Managers, Supervisors, peers, co-workers, subordinates, patients and visitors.
  • Must meet regular attendance standard and must stay at or below average sick leave utilization levels.

What you will bring to the role:

  • Surgical Technician Certificate from an accredited college, technical school, or equivalent
  • Minimum 6 months training, experience, or combination of education and experience
  • Current Washington State Surgical Technologist Registration
  • Current Basic Life Support Certification
  • Demonstrates competence in care of specimens and accurately handles specimens at all times
  • Ability to closely observe patient with minimal disturbance.
  • Utilizes initiative, strives to maintain steady level of productivity and is self-motivated. Organization and management of activities reflects due consideration for the needs of the department.
