Job summary

Canyon Vista Medical Center in Sierra Vista, AZ seeks a Certified Surgical Technician (Surg Tech) for a PRN role with 10‑hour shifts in our perioperative team. This position offers meaningful hands-on care in a fast-paced hospital setting and opportunities to grow professionally.

You will maintain sterile technique, prepare the OR, assist with instruments, monitor equipment, and support the surgical team throughout procedures.

Qualifications

  • Completed a Surgical Tech Program and current BLS certification.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 1–2 years of surgical tech experience preferred.
  • Understanding of HIPAA and healthcare regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the sterile field in the operating room and ensure aseptic techniques.
  • Set up the operating room and organize sterile instruments and supplies.
  • Check, adjust, and operate equipment such as sterilizers, lights, suction, and electrosurgical units.
  • Maintain fluids for use during surgery and assist with patient preparation.
  • Prepare, transport, position patients and assist with draping.
  • Scrub hands/arms and pass instruments to the surgeon as needed.
  • Anticipate surgeon needs and provide sterile items efficiently.
  • Assist with specimen handling and post-procedure room cleanup.

Canyon Vista Medical Center is a 106 bed acute care hospital that strives to offer exceptional care to the Sierra Vista community. Our Perioperative Services Department provides the majority of surgical care for Cochise County, supporting a wide range of specialties including orthopedics, general surgery, urology, gynecology, podiatry, spine, vascular, and endoscopy. Perioperative Services is a great place to work, with schedules that are generally Monday through Friday, consisting of four 10-hour shifts. The pace can be fast and at times demanding, but it is also highly fulfilling for those who enjoy hands‑on care and being part of a dedicated surgical team.

How You'll Contribute
  • Maintain the sterile field in the operating room, being constantly vigilant to see that proper aseptic techniques are utilized to prevent contamination and infection.
  • Before an operation, helps set up the operating room and organizes sterile table with surgical instruments and equipment, sterile linens, and sterile solutions.
  • Checks, adjusts, and operates equipment such as sterilizers, lights, suction machines, electrosurgical units, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Maintains supply of fluids such as plasma, saline, blood, and glucose for use during operation.
  • Prepares patients for surgery by washing, shaving, and disinfecting incision sites. Also transports, positions patients on table, and covers them with sterile surgical "drapes."
  • Scrubs hands and arms, puts on sterile operating room attire to be able to work within the sterile field established around the patient and to handle the sterilized instruments, equipment, and supplies used in the procedure.
  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, passing instruments, and providing sterile items in an efficient manner.
  • Helps prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens taken for laboratory analysis, holds retractors, cuts sutures, and applies dressings as directed.
  • Cleans and restocks the operating room.
  • Adheres to The Joint Commission (TJC) on professional standards and attends hospital in-service training sessions as directed. Provides age-appropriate care for all age groups.

What We're Looking For
  • Completed a Surgical Tech Program *Years of relevant experience may be substituted for required education/certification
  • Highschool Diploma or Equivalent required
  • 1 to 2 years of surgical tech experience preferred
  • BLS Certificate required
  • Exhibit a comprehensive understanding of healthcare regulatory and compliance (e.g., HIPAA). Skilled in the application of policies and procedures. Knowledge of Business Office Standards and Recommended Practices.
