Job Summary: The Surgical Technician (ST) provides high-level care by assisting with age-specific surgical procedures, practicing principles of surgical asepsis, identifying breaks in the sterile field, and ensuring appropriate action is taken. The technician anticipates the needs of the surgical team, promotes efficient flow of the operative procedure, and functions effectively in multiple areas. They follow policies, protocols, techniques, and guidelines, utilize interpersonal skills to maximize customer service, safe patient care, and professionalism. They contribute to a caring and cooperative work environment among a diverse workforce and patient population. Performs other duties as needed.
Completion of a surgical technician course required. No experience necessary.
Demonstrates basic competencies for surgical technician duties. Applies theoretical concepts, continually expands knowledge and clinical skills, and maintains a focus on surgical and procedural duties. Basic knowledge of healthcare regulations and accreditation is required. Exhibits professional behavior, works calmly under pressure, and communicates effectively. Must be able to speak, read, and write in English (Spanish preferred), use necessary computer software, troubleshoot equipment, perform technical patient care, read preference cards accurately, relate positively with others, follow policies, collaborate, accept direction, think critically, work independently, perform basic math, manage multiple tasks, organize workload, problem-solve, recall information accurately, pay close attention to detail, distinguish colors and smells as necessary, discern temperature variances, hear sufficiently, and see adequately for computer and document reading.
Surgical Technician certification preferred, provided by AST or NCCT. Basic Life Support certification required.
