Job Summary: The Surgical Technician (ST) provides high-level care by assisting with age-specific surgical procedures, practicing principles of surgical asepsis, identifying breaks in the sterile field, and ensuring appropriate action is taken. They anticipate the needs of the surgical team and promote an efficient flow of the operative procedure. The ST serves as a resource in their specialty area and functions effectively across multiple areas. They follow policies, protocols, techniques, and guidelines, utilizing interpersonal skills to maximize excellence in customer service, safe patient care, and professionalism. They contribute to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce and patient population. Performs other duties as needed.
Education and Experience: Completion of a surgical technician course is required. No prior experience is necessary.
Knowledge and Skills: The candidate demonstrates basic competencies for surgical technician duties. They can apply theoretical concepts to their duties, continually expanding their knowledge and clinical skills, especially in surgical and procedural technician responsibilities. A basic knowledge of healthcare regulations and accreditation standards is required. The candidate exhibits professional behavior, maintains a cooperative attitude, works calmly under pressure, and responds courteously. They should be able to speak, read, and write legibly in English (Spanish is preferred), operate necessary computer and software programs (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, electronic medical records), troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment, perform technical and supportive patient care activities, read preference cards accurately, and communicate effectively and professionally with others. They should be assertive, consistent in following policies, collaborative, able to accept direction, think critically, work independently with minimal supervision, perform basic math, manage multiple assignments, organize and prioritize workload, problem-solve, recall information accurately, pay close attention to detail, distinguish colors and smells as necessary, discern temperature variances through touch, hear sufficiently for conversation, and see adequately for reading screens and documents.
Licensures and Certifications: Surgical Technician certification is preferred, which can be obtained through AST (Association of Surgical Technologists) or NCCT (National Center for Competency Testing). Basic Life Support certification is required.
