RWJBarnabas Health is seeking a Surgical Technician for the RWJ Hamilton Operating Room. The role supports perioperative care, including scrubbing, aseptic technique, and instrument handling under RN supervision.

Responsibilities include equipment prep, case cart readiness, and collaboration with the surgical team to ensure patient safety. Competitive hourly wage and benefits offered. Based in Hamilton, NJ.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technician Program.
• Current CST credential.
• Current Basic Life Support (BCLS) certification.
• One year of Operating Room experience (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Scrub on all assigned procedures maintaining aseptic technique.
• Anticipate surgeon equipment and test instruments for functionality.
• Adhere to Universal Precautions, Steris/AUToclave sterilization cycles, and infection control procedures.
• Perform meticulous sponge, sharps, and instrument counts with the Circulating Nurse.
• Prepare medications as ordered following medication safety measures.
• Check case cart readiness with the RN and confirm implants and special equipment.
• Restock rooms and carts to support cost containment and workflow.
• Assist with end-of-case cleanup and instrument processing for transport.

Surgical Scrub Technician

Surgical Scrub Technicians become part of a highly collaborative perioperative team where precision, teamwork, and patient-centered care support exceptional surgical outcomes. As an Surgical Scrub Technician, you will function as the scrub nurse for surgical patients under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse. You will play an essential role in preparing the operating room, maintaining an aseptic environment, and assisting with preoperative care as outlined in policy and procedure manuals. A Typical Day

• Surgical Support: Scrubbing on all assigned surgical procedures, maintaining aseptic technique throughout the set-up and procedure, and performing the surgical "Time Out" alongside the full surgical team.
• Surgeon Anticipation: Consistently anticipating the equipment, supply, and instrument needs of the surgeon, and proactively testing equipment and instruments for functionality.
• Sterilization & Infection Control: Adhering to departmental dress codes, following traffic patterns in Surgical Services, and demonstrating advanced knowledge of Universal Precautions, Biological Indicators, and sterilization cycles (including autoclaves and Steris 1).
• Safety & Counts: Performing meticulous sponge, sharp, and instrument counts with the Circulating Nurse per established Count Policy, and utilizing hands-free techniques for sharps when feasible.
• Medication Safety: Preparing medications as ordered while strictly following medication safety measures.
• Case Preparedness: Collaborating with the RN to check the preparedness of the case cart with the DPC, collecting additional items as needed, and checking for implants and special equipment prior to the start of the case.
• Equipment Management: Troubleshooting equipment or instrument failures, immediately removing defective equipment from circulation, and notifying appropriate personnel.
• Resource Management: Restocking rooms and carts consistently in a judicious manner to participate in organizational cost containment.
• End-of-Case Cleanup: Performing proper end-of-case cleanup, including reassembling instrument trays, spraying them with cleansing agents, placing soiled instruments covered on the case cart for transport to the soiled utility room, removing all sharps to proper containers, and managing standard and red-bag biohazard waste disposal.
• Team Collaboration: Communicating accurate, patient-specific information during reliefs or end-of-shift reports, and actively assisting in the orientation and mentoring of new employees.
