Job summary

UCLA Health in Los Angeles is seeking a Surgical Technician to support operating room activities on an as-needed basis. You will prep, inspect, and organize instruments, maintain sterile technique, and assist surgeons during procedures.

Requirements include graduation from an accredited Surgical Technician program, current BLS, and the ability to scrub in multiple specialties. Two years of experience is preferred. Join a team dedicated to patient safety and continuous learning.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technician program, required.
• Minimum two (2) years of Surgical Technician experience, required.
• Ability to scrub in multiple surgical specialties/service lines, required.
• Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association, required.
• Surgical Technician certification from the NBSTSA, preferred.
• Knowledge of universal precautions, aseptic technique, operating room sanitation, and applicable departmental policies and procedures.
• Working knowledge of surgical procedures, anatomy, medical terminology, surgical instrumentation, and operating room equipment.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills with patients, physicians, and healthcare team members.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships, prioritize responsibilities, recognize emergencies, and respond appropriately in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to work independently, demonstrate attention to detail, maintain accuracy, safely handle surgical equipment, and perform the physical requirements of the role, including prolonged standing, lifting, pushing, and pulling.
• Commitment to continuous learning, professional development, and maintaining current knowledge of surgical practices and technologies.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, inspect, and organize surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies according to departmental standards and procedure requirements.
• Establish and maintain a sterile field throughout surgical procedures, ensuring adherence to infection prevention and aseptic techniques.
• Anticipate the needs of the surgical team by providing instruments, supplies, medications, and equipment in a timely and efficient manner.
• Assist surgeons and perioperative staff during procedures, including surgical counts, specimen handling, patient positioning, draping, dressings, and related intraoperative support activities.
• Ensure the proper care, handling, and processing of surgical instruments and equipment before, during, and after procedures.
• Collaborate with surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare team members to promote patient safety and positive surgical outcomes.
• Participate in ongoing education, competency validation, and professional development activities.
