Job summary

Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge, LA seeks a Surgical Technician for the Operating Room on days/evenings. This role supports RNs and surgeons across all specialties with emphasis on aseptic technique and instrument care. Responsibilities include scrubbing, assisting with orders, training new staff, and ensuring safe patient care.

Requires a high school diploma and accredited surgical tech program; CST preferred. Schedule includes rotating shifts and call coverage.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of an accredited surgical tech program, training at an approved facility, or one year of surgical tech experience is required.
• Surgical Technologist certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assists RN in prioritizing implementation of physicians' orders according to patient needs, physicians' requests and interdepartmental procedure.
• Demonstrates ability to scrub on all levels of patient care, with all specialties.
• Acts as a resource person and provides directions to other members of the healthcare team to ensure comprehensive and safe patient care.
• Properly cares for instruments and equipment. Manages and operates equipment safely and efficiently. Understands care of expensive instruments and equipment.
• Applies and monitors the principles of aseptic technique throughout the intra-operative period and initiates corrective action when break in technique occurs.
• Anticipates needs and assists in gathering supplies, equipment, and medications. Uses supplies judiciously.
• Assures that tissue and other specimens are accurately identified and given to the circulating nurse before the end of the procedure and after circulating nurse labels appropriately, and transports specimen to the appropriate area.
• Orients, trains, and assists new personnel as directed by clinical educator. Completes documentation of orientation as instructed.
• Perform other duties assigned by Department management according to policies and procedures and the mission of Woman's Hospital.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent

Completion of an accredited surgical tech program or equivalent experience

Surgical Technologist certification preferred
