Job summary

Lakewood Ranch Medical Center in Bradenton, FL seeks an OR Surgical Tech to join our surgical services team. This full-time, day-shift position supports nursing care for surgical patients, performs scrub duties, and assists with instrument and supply management in a fast-paced operating room.

Qualifications

  • 1 year of surgical technologist experience preferred.
  • Completion of an accredited surgical technologist program.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare operating rooms for surgical procedures, including equipment and patient verification.
  • Maintain sterile technique and aseptic practices to preserve the sterile field.
  • Anticipate surgeon needs and provide instruments during procedures.
  • Count sponges, needles and instruments; ensure accountability for all surgical items.
  • Safely prepare and administer medications on the sterile field and assist with patient positioning.

Job Overview

Assists in providing nursing care to surgical patients. Performs scrub duties, assists in the maintenance of instruments, equipment and supplies. Assists in preparation, transportation and supervision of patients. Other duties as assigned.

General Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, patient safety standards, infection control protocols, confidentiality requirements, and mandatory training programs.
  • Prepare operating rooms for surgical procedures, including equipment, instruments, supplies, and patient verification processes.
  • Maintain strict sterile technique and aseptic practices, preserving the sterile field and correcting breaches when identified.
  • Support a safe surgical environment through proper waste disposal, specimen handling, fire prevention, and environmental controls.
  • Perform accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts while maintaining accountability for all surgical items.
  • Anticipate surgeon needs during procedures by providing instruments, managing surgical supplies, assisting with exposure, tissue handling, and wound closure.
  • Safely prepare and administer medications on the sterile field, manage specimens, respond to emergencies, and assist with patient positioning.
  • Operate surgical equipment and technology safely, including electrosurgical units, specialty instruments, radiology equipment, and laser systems, while ensuring proper post-procedure cleanup and turnover.
Qualifications
  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
  • 1 year of surgical technologist experience preferred.
  • Successful completion of surgical technologist course from an accredited program.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills, basic computer skills, and customer service skills required.
