- GENERAL SUMMARY
The Surgical Support Technologist assists the licensed anesthesia provider in the acquisition, preparation and application of equipment and supplies required for the administration of anesthesia. The Surgical support technologist will also assist staff as needed with supplies and equipment for cases.
- ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Safely transport patients as requested from Pre-op, Emergency Dept or other nursing units using patient pick up slip to the Operating Room.
- Assists with the flow of stretchers throughout perioperative services, ensuring stretchers are clean and prepared for transport to include all O2 tanks are full and secure on stretchers, replacing empty tanks as needed.
- Retrieves necessary equipment and supplies for procedures as requested by nurse or scrub tech.
- Assists with lifting/transfer of patient to/from OR table to stretcher.
- Transports lab specimens and blood products as requested.
- Restock of general items in locker rooms, scrub sinks, sub sterile rooms daily as needed, ensuring adequate stock of all necessary supplies in these areas.
- Assists with orderly organization of departmental hallway equipment, equipment storage rooms, anesthesia carts.
- Ensures proper functioning and condition of anesthesia equipment.
- Responsible for anesthesia machine turnover, removing trash, restocking anesthesia supplies in the operating rooms and offsite locations between and after anesthetics. Prepares and maintains supplies needed for advanced airway equipment including video laryngoscopes, difficult airway cart, and intubating fiberoptic bronchoscopes. Prepares invasive pressure monitoring system ahead of case and intraoperatively as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned in support of the anesthesiology department needs as determined by the practicing anesthesia provider or Operating Room Registered Nurse.
- LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
- Certified Nurse Assistant, Medical Assistant, or Emergency Medical Technician preferred.
- MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Must provide record of a completed diploma (or equivalent) or academic transcript for those areas performing complexity testing.
- At least one year of previous health related experience preferred.
- AHA BLS required.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and patient care procedures as it relates to anesthesia, airway support devices, peripheral and central line access devices, cardiovascular procedures.
- Proficient in technical and professional skills in assigned areas.
- WORKING CONDITIONS
- Surgical areas work environment with occasional exposure to unpleasant odors from disinfectant solutions/chemicals. Frequent exposure to infectious agents when cleaning equipment and handling needles. Potential for personal harm or injury is reduced when proper safety and health precautions are followed. Normal operating room environment with some exposure to excessive noise and increased temperature.
