General Summary Of Duties

Surgical technologists, also called scrubs and surgical or operating room technicians, assist in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. Surgical technologists are members of operating room teams, which most commonly include surgeons, anesthesiologists, and circulating nurses.

Education/Experience/Requirements
  • A graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program
  • 2 years' Ortho and Urology experience required; preferably joints
Essential Functions
  • Prepares and maintains medical equipment for surgical procedures.
  • Prepares the operating room by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, sterile drapes, and solutions.
  • Assists in patient pre-operation preparations, including skin prep, shaving, and disinfecting incision sites.
  • Gets patients ready for surgery, helps position them, and covers with sterile drapes.
  • Observes vital signs, checks charts, and assists with sterile gowning and gloving.
  • Passes instruments and supplies, helps with specimen handling, and disposes of specimens.
  • Operates sterilizers, lights, suction machines, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Post-operation, assists in patient transfer and cleans/restocks the operating room.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Physical/Mental Demands
  • Ability to stand for long periods and lift or turn disabled patients.
  • Requires sitting and standing, concentration, verbal communication, and computer use.
