The Surgical Coordinator is responsible for coordinating all aspects of tests, procedures, and surgeries.

This is a large surgical practice with over 50 staff members, including 2 other surgical coordinators and 14 surgeons across multiple specialties.

**Very busy Lung & Airway Center/Surgical Subspecialties practice**

Responsibilities include authorizing, coordinating, and booking surgeries. Experience in authorizations and surgical booking is strongly preferred.

A typical day for a Surgical Coordinator at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Coordinating all aspects of tests, procedures, and surgeries under the supervision of the Practice Supervisor or Manager and physicians.
  • Scheduling procedures promptly and courteously, following facility guidelines, and ensuring proper equipment is ordered.
  • Verifying patient demographics, insurance information, obtaining precertification, and logging all details.
  • Scheduling procedure appointments, communicating with patients, and coordinating pre-surgical preparations.
  • Arranging for co-surgeons or assistants and cross-scheduling with other departments as needed.
  • Ensuring pre-op procedures are followed, including documentation, scheduling pre-surgery appointments, obtaining medical clearances, and coordinating pre-admission testing.
  • Maintaining block time guidelines at hospitals.
  • Coordinating postoperative care under provider direction.
  • Obtaining billing information, working with coding, and reconciling charges.
  • Tracking procedures, testing, and pathology results.
  • Providing excellent customer service, greeting patients, and responding to their needs with empathy.
  • Collaborating with team members, managing work schedules, and participating in surgical service meetings.
  • Adhering to organizational competencies and standards.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent plus two years of related experience.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt.

Preferred:

  • Two years of progressive experience in a medical office.
  • Proficiency in medical terminology and HIPAA guidelines.
  • Surgical coding knowledge (CPT and ICD-10).
  • CPR certification.
