This role involves assisting with patient transport, maintaining a clean environment, and preparing equipment for procedures. Duke Nursing Highlights:
Perform a variety of technical, environmental, and patient care duties under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. These duties are performed in accordance with established hospital and nursing policy and within the legal scope of practice for the unlicensed caregiver.
Duties and Responsibilities of this LevelLevel I
Verify patient location and identification.
Transfer and/or assist patients during transport, following departmental safety guidelines.
Communicate with patients and respond to patient needs promptly, satisfy needs or refer their requests to
appropriate personnel.
Keep charge nurse informed of room status and attendant availability.
Assist in the orientation of new staff as requested by nurse manager or designee.
Provide emergency assistance as required and/or directed by surgeon and/or nursing personnel.
Transport specimen, equipment, etc. to appropriate area in safe and efficient manner.
According to the plan of care developed by the RN, deliver patient care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
Successfully complete annual self-instructional unit regarding age appropriate care for the infant, toddler, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
Prepare the unit for cases/ procedures utilizing functional equipment and supplies.
Assist with positioning the patient and follow accepted procedures for preparation of patients for surgical procedures.
Assist with wraps, casts, and dressings.
Route non-functional equipment to proper maintenance department for repair, noting on equipment what the malfunction appears to be. Assist in minor maintenance functions (i.e. replace light bulbs in power sources and surgical lights). Set up and troubleshoot all equipment in service line and 85% of all equipment in other services.
Accurately and safely use all patient positioning devices and tables.
Clean equipment, tables and floor as required with proper cleaning solution.
Collect, bag and remove soiled linen and trash properly.
Replace suction liners, trash bags and other supplies as needed.
Return cleaned equipment to appropriate area after the case.
Stock and maintain adequate levels of supplies at scrub sink and sub rooms as appropriate.
Maintain orderly work environment by keeping operating rooms, storage areas, hallways and all units clean, tidy and hazard free.
Obtain and maintain unit supplies and equipment.
Required Qualifications at this Level EducationWork requires basic mechanical knowledge for assembly of equipment and the ability to comprehend and follow instructions normally acquired through a partial high school education.
ExperienceLevel I
Six months experience in a hospital setting or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
Degrees, Licensure, and/or CertificationLevel I
Current BCLS certification.
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesLevel I
Basic mechanical knowledge for assembly of equipment and the ability to comprehend and follow instructions.
Knowledge of sterile technique.
Physical abilities to complete job duties which include heavy lifting, prolonged sitting, standing, and walking, ability to push, pull climb, stoop/kneel, reach overhead and rotate trunk for prolonged periods.
