Job summary

The Surgical Assistant at Mercy Health supports the operating room team by serving as an entry-level assistant under the surgeon's supervision. You will scrub, glove, and gown, assist with instrument counts, and help prepare the sterile field for procedures in accordance with hospital policy.

This role emphasizes learning and growth, requires completion of a Surgical Assistant Program, and includes on-call responsibilities with day/afternoon shifts, for a full-time schedule.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Completion of a Surgical Assistant Program is required.
• BLS certification preferred upon hire and must be obtained prior to direct patient care.
• CSFA or equivalent certification is required.

Responsibilities

• Routinely assists as first/second assistant on surgical cases while maintaining sterile technique.
• Prepare OR, procure equipment, and ensure sterile field is maintained.
• Assist with patient positioning, prepping, and draping; monitor instrumentation and supplies.
• Communicate with the circulating nurse about instrument status and safety concerns.
• Participate in room turnover and quality improvement activities.
