General Summary of Position

MedStar Health is seeking a Surgical Assistant to join our team at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.

As a Surgical Assistant, you will collaborate with surgeons and the healthcare team to perform safe surgeries with optimal patient outcomes. The role involves assisting during intra-operative procedures, handling tissues, providing exposure, using instruments, suturing, and maintaining homeostasis. Under supervision, responsibilities may include preparing and administering injections (limited to intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular), establishing peripheral IV lines, and accessing patient charts. However, the role does not include participating in auto-transfusions, injecting/medicating patients, or pre/post-operative patient care.

Primary Duties

1. Function as a Surgical Assistant, anticipating the next steps in the patient's surgery.
2. Perform well with multiple instruments and equipment.
3. Assist in room setup and turnover.
4. Respond professionally to changing assignments and display safety consciousness in all OR activities.
5. Provide compassionate care.
6. Assist other team members proactively.
7. Support OR leadership with cost-effective surgical methods, evaluate products, and suggest process improvements and standardization of equipment/products.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• 1-2 years' experience as a surgical technologist for major surgeries.
• ACLS certification.
• Graduate of an accredited Surgical First Assist program.
• CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) preferred.
• Successful experience as a CST/CFA preferred.

This position offers a hiring range of $34.98 - $62.52.
