General Summary of Position

MedStar Health is seeking a Surgical Assistant to join our team at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center. As a Surgical Assistant, you will collaborate with surgeons and healthcare team members to perform safe operations with optimal patient outcomes. The role involves assisting during surgeries, handling tissues, providing exposure, using instruments, suturing, and maintaining homeostasis. Under on-site supervision, responsibilities may include preparing and administering injections (limited to intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular), and establishing peripheral intravenous lines. The Surgical Assistant may access patient charts for relevant information but does not participate in auto-transfusions or the administration of medications, nor in pre- or post-operative patient care.

Primary Duties

• Function as a Surgical Assistant, anticipating the next steps in surgical procedures.
• Assist with multiple instruments and equipment, and aid in room setup and turnover.
• Respond professionally to changing assignments, maintaining safety consciousness in the operating room.
• Provide compassionate patient care.
• Assist team members proactively and support operating room leadership with cost-effective practices and product evaluations.
• Suggest process improvements and standardize equipment and procedures.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• 1-2 years' experience as a surgical technologist for major surgeries.
• ACLS certification.
• Graduate of an accredited Surgical First Assist program.
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) preferred.
• 1-2 years' successful experience as a CST or CFA preferred.

This position offers a hiring range of $34.98 - $59.26.
