Job summary

FirstHealth of the Carolinas is seeking an experienced SAU Surgical Admission Unit Registered Nurse to support the preparation of patients for surgery. The role focuses on nursing assessment, patient education, and coordination with surgical and anesthesia teams to ensure timely readiness.

Responsibilities include completing preoperative assessments, verifying documentation, initiating IV access, and educating patients.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
• Current RN licensure in NC or a compact state.
• Current BLS certification.
• Current ACLS certification.
• Preoperative, perioperative or acute care nursing experience preferred.
• Strong assessment, IV, communication and organizational skills.

The Surgical Admission Unit (SAU) Registered Nurse prepares patients for surgery through nursing assessment, patient education, and coordination with the surgical and anesthesia teams. Provides safe, compassionate care while supporting timely surgical readiness.

• Initiate IV access and adminster medication and treatments as ordered.
• Educate pateints and families on the surgical process and what to expect.
• Communicate patient needs and provide a thorough handoff to the receving team.
• Document care accurately and follow organizational policies and nursing standards.
