Position Summary

The Department of Surgery at The University of North Carolina ( UNC ) is seeking a Division Chief to lead our Division of Abdominal Transplant Surgery. The Division of Abdominal Transplant Surgery is among 10 clinical Divisions in the Department of Surgery. The Division currently includes 7 faculty members (4 abdominal transplant surgeons, 1 clinical instructor, and 2 research scientists). The faculty members offer a broad array of clinical services providing the highest quality care for transplant surgery patients including liver, kidney, and pancreas transplants. The team performs deceased donor transplants, living donor transplants, living donor nephrectomies, minimally invasive hepatobiliary surgery, autologous islet transplantation, general surgery care for transplant patients and dialysis access procedures for patients with end stage renal disease.

The incoming Chief will be responsible for partnering with the Chair of the Department of Surgery to promote clinical growth and academic success in a collaborative environment. The UNC School of Medicine mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of North Carolinians, and others whom we serve. The Department of Surgery offers potential candidates a supportive practice environment with an emphasis on quality patient care, research, teaching, individual career development, and collaboration among faculty members.

The Division Chief will also serve as the Medical Director of UNC’s Comprehensive Transplant Center which oversees the solid organ and islet transplant programs. This individual works in a close relationship with UNC hospital leadership regarding operational oversight of the clinical programs including quality initiatives. The responsibilities of the Medical Director include managing strategic activities, acting on day-to-day operational issues in support of the transplant service line, developing goals, policies, and procedures for the comprehensive transplant center to assure continued compliance with applicable laws and regulations including the guidelines established by UNOS , CMS , and TJC .

This position is being recruited as open rank appointment at an FTE between 0.5 FTE and 1.0 FTE . The appointment may also be offered as a variable, fixed term track, or tenure/tenure track appointment. The faculty member will be expected to perform both clinical and research duties, along with the academic responsibilities of an educational institution.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Only candidates who are board certified by the American Board of Surgery and have completed an American Society of Transplant Surgeons fellowship (or equivalent) should apply. Candidates must have leadership experience and be currently active in transplant surgery. Salary and level of appointment will be based upon experience and qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

The ideal applicant will have a strong track record of programmatic development, academic productivity, mentorship, and demonstrate excellent leadership skills. Applicants with research experience in clinical outcomes, quality and safety, health services, education, ethics, informatics, or basic science/translational research are strongly encouraged to apply.
