Job Description:

TransMedics has initiated a national program for organ retrieval and management in collaboration with leading transplant programs and OPOs across the U.S. The goal is to increase donor organ utilization for transplant using the Organ Care System (OCS) technology platform, along with dedicated logistics and a clinical network to maximize quality and efficiency. The cardiothoracic donor procurement surgeon will play a critical role in driving OCS utilization for FDA-approved OCS lung and heart indications, standardizing and maximizing the quality of surgical assessment and procurement for transplant programs nationwide.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES INCLUDE:

1. Perform all aspects of donor heart and lung procurement surgery, including clinical assessment (conduct bronchoscopy as needed), surgical retrieval, and OCS instrumentation, following protocols at transplant centers across the US.
2. Travel to donor/recipient sites as needed, with possible assignments in various locations for extended periods.
3. Maintain high professional and communication standards to build confidence and positive perceptions in the OR and with transplant surgeons.
4. Develop protocols for OCS surgical retrieval, donor organ management, and assessment.
5. Assist in training and mentoring the OCS surgical retrieval team across the US, including proctoring procedures to expand the team.
6. Communicate with transplant surgeons and TMDX staff to facilitate clinical decisions and organ status updates.
7. Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

1. MD or equivalent with 5+ years’ experience in deceased cardiothoracic (lung and heart) donor procurement and assessments, or advanced surgical procedures.
2. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
3. Ability to work independently and collaboratively, building rapport with internal and external contacts.
4. Calm and professional under pressure.
5. Highly flexible and adaptable.
6. Proficiency with electronic messaging platforms and MS Office Suite.

EDUCATION:

1. MD degree or equivalent with specialized cardiothoracic surgical training.
2. Or MD degree with at least 5+ years of relevant experience in donor organ procurement or advanced surgical procedures.
