To fulfill the mission and role of Jefferson Abington Hospital, the Chair, Department of Surgery is an employed position with administrative, educational, and clinical responsibilities. This position reports directly to the Chief of Staff, Jefferson Abington Hospital.

In addition to fulfilling the requirements outlined in the Jefferson Medical Group physician contract, the Chair of the Department of Surgery at Abington-Jefferson Health works in collaboration with Hospital Leadership, the Chief Medical Officer, and the Medical Executive Committee, along with Enterprise service lines, to provide leadership, strategy, and oversight over the Surgery Department for Jefferson Abington Hospital.
Responsibilities are divided equally between clinical work hours and administrative duties. It is expected that the Surgery Department Chair's full-time equivalent (FTE) splits time equally between clinical hours (0.5 FTE) and administrative hours (0.5 FTE).
The Chair will provide overall leadership of Divisions and Sections within the Department of Surgery, overseeing strategic execution, clinical services, professional performance, business performance, medical education, scholarship, and physician practice. The Chair will promote an environment that facilitates job satisfaction and well-being among physicians by establishing effective communication channels and seeking stakeholder input in strategic planning. The Chair establishes and evaluates performance expectations to ensure high-quality patient care, clinical standards, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and outcome monitoring. The Chair leads multidisciplinary programs to improve care efficiency and equity, champions efforts to enhance the patient experience, and drives business development, including recruiting, workforce building, policy setting, and protocol development to increase department volume and sophistication. This involves collaboration on strategic planning, annual operational planning, and project selection to meet safety, growth, service, quality, and cost objectives. The Chair is responsible for key performance indicators at the department level, partnering with other departments to improve operational efficiencies across JAH campuses.
The Chair acts as the chief education officer within the department, working with residency and fellowship program directors to ensure an optimal learning environment for medical students, residents, staff physicians, and other healthcare providers. The Chair promotes scholarly achievement, clinical research, and collaboration with Jefferson University research initiatives, overseeing general surgery residency, dental residency, and bariatric fellowship programs.
The Chair actively attends and occasionally leads education conferences for faculty, residents, and students, ensuring excellent clinical education and training for all learners. The Chair also aligns employed and community-based physicians, advocates for change initiatives, and provides leadership for strategic execution, clinical services, professional and business performance, medical education, research, and physician practice. The Chair will develop departmental vision, focus on increasing referrals, expanding clinical programs, and enhancing research efforts. Active patient practice, involving both hospital-based and ambulatory care, is expected.
The Chair leads the Department of Surgery in unifying efforts to improve patient access and deliver high-quality services. The Chair is a voting member of the Medical Staff Executive Committee.
