Job description

Surgery Coordinator

Humane Society for Hamilton County

Starting Pay: $18.00-$23.00 per hour, based on experience

Help animals heal. Support lifesaving surgery. Do work that changes outcomes.

The Humane Society for Hamilton County is hiring a Surgery Coordinator to support our shelter in providing high-quality surgical and post‑operative care for the animals in our care. This role is perfect for someone with veterinary medical experience who is organized, detail‑oriented, calm under pressure, and comfortable supporting animals through every stage of the surgery process. If you have experience with clinical surgery, post‑operative care, medical record‑keeping, and compassionate animal handling, this is meaningful work with real impact every single day.

What You’ll Do
  • Assist with surgical preparation, intubation, monitoring vitals, administering IVs, wound care, dentals, emergency triage, euthanasia, and O.R. preparation.
  • Ensure animals receive proper post‑operative care according to veterinarian recommendations and HSHC standards.
  • Help create and manage the weekly surgery schedule so animals are altered in a timely manner.
  • Prioritize surgeries for animals waiting to go home, enter foster care, or move forward in their lifesaving journey.
  • Communicate pre‑ and post‑operative care instructions to staff, medical managers, foster team members, and adopters.
  • Schedule adopter pick‑up times and review post‑operative instructions at discharge.
  • Maintain accurate surgery notes, medical records, and follow‑up care information in PetPoint.
  • Support animals requiring special or critical care, including insulin‑dependent animals, animals needing hand feeding, sub‑Q fluids, special diets, or other in‑house care plans.
  • Assist with outsourced veterinary and specialty care cases, including orthopedic, neurology, and other advanced care needs.
  • Help keep the surgery suite, operating room, x‑ray room, equipment, and surgery laundry clean, organized, and ready for use.
  • Support proper handling, tracking, and security of controlled substances in accordance with DEA regulations and HSHC protocols.
  • Assist the Medical Department as needed.
  • Participate in holiday scheduling and after‑hours emergency support.
  • Take on additional operational and medical support duties as assigned.
What We’re Looking For
  • Veterinary medical experience, including supporting a veterinarian in clinical surgery and post‑operative care.
  • Experience with intubation, monitoring vitals, administering IVs, wound care, dentals, emergency triage, euthanasia, and O.R. preparation.
  • RVT certification is a plus, but not required.
  • Ability to safely handle dogs and cats who may be fearful, reactive, anxious, or fractious.
  • Experience identifying and supporting treatment plans for common medical conditions in dogs and cats.
  • Proficiency in medical calculations, including drugs, constant rate infusions, and unit conversions.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Clear, professional, and compassionate communication.
  • Comfortable with computers, email, Microsoft Office, PetPoint, Excel, or similar database systems.
  • Ability to multitask, solve problems, and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Comfortable navigating difficult, stressful, and fast‑moving situations.
  • Capacity to pivot quickly when unexpected medical or shelter needs arise.
  • Availability to work some nights, weekends, holidays, and after‑hours emergency rotations.
  • Thrives in an environment with animal sounds, smells, allergens, and constant movement.
  • Belief in a positive, whatever‑it‑takes culture.
  • Support and embrace a no‑kill philosophy.
