Position Responsibilities:

Job Summary: Collaborates with management in the planning, direction, coordination, and management of the daily and administrative operations within the scope of nursing service administration. Participates in developing and implementing policies and procedures necessary to achieve departmental short- and long-range goals and objectives.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Plans and supervises the daily business and administrative operations to ensure the delivery of professional patient-centered care.
  • Participates in developing, revising, and implementing departmental policies and procedures designed to accomplish departmental priorities and long-range goals. Interprets and advises subordinate personnel on Hospital policies and procedures and ensures adherence to Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) standards.
  • Supervises employees including work allocation, training, scheduling, evaluation, and problem resolution while on duty. Promotes and participates in education, research, and performance improvement activities.
  • Acts as the leadership representative for the organization in the absence of department managers and directors. Collaborates and partners with organizational leaders as an extension of the leadership and administrative teams.
  • Serves as an engaged member of the leadership team, role modeling excellence in care delivery, customer service, and organizational operations. Promotes positive professional relationships through effective and respectful communication and interactions.
  • Participates in planning, developing, and recommending the annual staffing budget and assists in planning capital equipment and expense budget for the department.
  • Updates incoming Supervisor and other relevant personnel on the condition of patients, particularly critically ill patients, staffing situations, and unusual events which occur during assigned shifts.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with various departmental personnel, patients' families, physicians, and outside agencies to exchange information, resolve operational problems, and improve the quality of patient care.
  • Makes nursing rounds to maintain visibility, monitor activity, and serve as a resource. Provides professional nursing care to patients in response to workload or staffing shortages.
  • Supports internal organizational communication by disseminating and clarifying shared information. Supports clinical department manager initiatives by reinforcing messaging.
  • Prepares reports and maintains pertinent records and files; maintains proper equipment and inventory levels. Maintains a database to create reports upon demand.
