Job summary

Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana seeks a Life Sciences Lab Technician to support instructional biology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and chemistry labs. Duties include preparing materials, maintaining equipment, managing inventory, and ensuring safety and compliance during the academic year.

The role requires setup/teardown, routine maintenance, and coordination with faculty for lab improvements.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Associate degree or higher in biology, life sciences, chemistry, or related field is preferred.
  • Experience with microscopes, microbiology techniques, laboratory equipment, inventory management, and laboratory safety is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and tear down instructional life science laboratories and laboratory practicals, including equipment, models, specimens, slides, reagents, and other materials.
  • Prepare solutions, media, cultures, specimens, and other laboratory materials as directed by faculty.
  • Support microbiology laboratory preparation, sterilization, cleanup, and appropriate disposal of biological materials.
  • Maintain, clean, and perform routine troubleshooting of microscopes and other laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Maintain inventories of prepared slides, models, specimens, chemicals, equipment, and other laboratory resources.
  • Maintain and monitor inventories of consumable and non-consumable laboratory supplies and communicate purchasing or replacement needs.
  • Receive, organize, and rotate laboratory supplies and maintain accurate inventory records.
  • Clean and maintain laboratories, preparation rooms, storage areas, equipment, and instructional materials.
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance and calibration and coordinate repair needs with the appropriate supervisor.
  • Maintain appropriate chemical, biological, safety, equipment, and laboratory documentation.
  • Ensure proper storage and disposal of chemical, microbiological, biological sharps, and other laboratory waste.
  • Assist with chemistry and other science laboratory preparation and maintenance as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laboratory safety regulations, institutional policies, and procedures.
  • Work with faculty to improve laboratory organization, preparation procedures, equipment, and instructional support.

Job description

Under the supervision of the Biology/Life Sciences Program Chair, Department Chair, Dean, or designee, the Life Sciences Lab Technician supports instructional laboratories in biology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and, as needed, chemistry. The position is responsible for laboratory preparation and teardown, equipment maintenance, inventory management, safety, and general laboratory organization. This is a part-time, 9-month position aligned with the academic year.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Set up and tear down instructional life science laboratories and laboratory practicals, including equipment, models, specimens, slides, reagents, and other materials.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Associate degree or higher in biology, life sciences, chemistry, or a related field and/or experience working in a science laboratory setting.
  • Experience with microscopes, microbiology techniques, laboratory equipment, inventory management, and laboratory safety is preferred.
