Job description

The Bureau of Food Safety and Community Sanitation (BFSCS) protects the public, including New York's most vulnerable citizens from a broad range of hazards that may pose a threat to health or safety. This includes hazards related to food safety wherever meals are served to the public, including restaurants, school cafeterias, mobile food vending carts, senior centers and soup kitchens, firsthand and second-hand smoke for all places of employment and public spaces. BFSCS also monitors compliance with regulations in other facilities, such as tattoo parlors, correctional facilities, and homeless shelters. Additionally, BFSCS investigates environmental health complaints received from New York City residents.


Duties will include:

  1. Provide Bureau/community-facing event support (i.e. – Conference room set-ups, metered mail Post Office runs, Gotham equipment drop-offs/pick-ups, prepping/unpacking of literature, promotional items and/or equipment for Transportation Services etc.)
  2. Distribute, collect, and maintain Field Staff equipment, supplies and forms.
  3. Complete Inventory Tracking (i.e. – maintain a tracking report and provide reports as needed)
  4. Maintain ample distribution levels, reorders, and receiving of printed Inspection staff forms.
  5. Provide offsite location support, as needed, and outlined above to the Health Academy, Maspeth, and Zerega worksite.
  6. Perform general office tasks such as filing, record retention, generating email correspondence, initiating telephone inquiries/follow-ups etc.
  7. Receive and logging of Bureau equipment and supplies.
  8. Special Projects as assigned.

Preferred Skills

  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal and organizational skills as well as computer skills.
  • Valid New York State Driver’s license.

40 hours/Week

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
