Supplier Quality Inspector

Charlotte, NC - hybrid

Summary of the role

The Supplier Quality Inspector role plays a key role in assessing the quality of machinery and parts manufactured by our vendors. This person is well experienced with different types of materials testing and travels to our suppliers' locations to conduct these inspections. Although based out of our Charlotte, NC office, the role includes significant travel.

The following responsibilities form the core of this role:

  • Inspects parts, assemblies, and finished products in accordance with contract and corporate specifications; follows the company’s inspection guidelines to conduct visual, dimensional, mechanical, electrical tests, and functional inspections on a wide variety of components, assemblies, equipment, systems, supplies, and materials in the US and abroad.
  • Represents Andritz Hydro’s interests and communicates effectively with clients and vendors in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Prepares and maintains quality records and inspection reports.
  • Investigates and documents the root cause of non-conformances.
  • Conducts problem-solving and resolution, collaborating with vendors, engineering, project management, and customers.
  • Develops, implements, applies, and/or witnesses NDT techniques and procedures.
  • Applies knowledge of Supplier Quality Engineering methodologies and NDT methods for input to design reviews, failure analysis, quality program plans, and construction documentation.
  • Develops and maintains healthy working relationships with clients and subcontractors.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the associate is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk or hear; and frequently required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Writes Inspection and Test Plans.
  • Participates and steers root cause analysis.
  • Takes actions necessary to ensure compliance with contract requirements.
  • Stops work activities in the event of a quality issue.
  • Accepts or rejects testing results and items of work.
  • Creates inspection planning within budget for the project.
  • Measures or directs the verification of the features of components.
  • Inspection duties may include up to 90% travel.

  • A BS degree in engineering (preferably in mechanical, electrical, or material science).
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in the hydropower industry or equivalent experience in an industrial construction environment.
  • NDT/NDE related technical experience.

OR

  • Associate Degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school.
  • 5+ years of experience in the hydropower industry preferred or an equivalent education and experience in an industrial construction or manufacturing environment.
  • CWI or possess the education and experience required to qualify for certification and a working knowledge of ASME and AWS Codes.
  • NDT/NDE related technical experience and/or qualified to pass Level 2 certification in RT, UT, PT, and/or MT is a plus.

Additional Competencies

  • A working knowledge of ASME, AWS, CSA, and ISO Codes.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex engineering drawings.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented individual with good judgment.
  • Proven ability to creatively overcome problems and work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability and experience with typical equipment, such as micrometers, Vernier calipers, height gauges, dial indicators, oscilloscopes, component testers, and the like.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, complex engineering drawings, and procedure manuals.
  • Able to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds or more.
  • MS Office suite compatible for correspondence and reporting.
  • Laser metrology experience with machined parts is a plus.
