Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan repayment initiative. Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria per VHA policy and submit their application within four months of appointment. The program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after reviewing the application.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

1. United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens are unavailable, per VA Policy.
2. English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English.
3. Education: A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution.
4. Certification: Candidates must meet one of the following:
   1. Generalist certification as an MLS by ASCP BOC or AMT.
   2. Generalist certification as an MT by ASCP BOR or AMT.
   3. Categorical or Specialist certification by ASCP or AMT (accepting Hematology & Coagulation only). Note: Categorical and specialist certifications are not acceptable for CLS Generalist positions or unrelated lab sections.
5. Grade Determinations: For GS-12 Supervisory Clinical Laboratory Scientist, candidates need:
   1. One year of creditable experience at GS-11 level.
   2. Knowledge of clinical laboratory science principles, quality control, informatics, instrumentation, and complex instructions.
   3. Demonstration of KSAs including knowledge of laws, quality management, leadership, planning, and fiscal management.
6. Preferred Experience: Experience in Hematology, CLS/MT, and leadership skills.

Duties

The Supervisory Clinical Laboratory Scientist oversees the clinical laboratory, including planning, staffing, training, and ensuring compliance with regulations. Responsibilities include supervising daily operations, maintaining quality assurance, coordinating training, liaising with departments, and managing administrative tasks. The role also involves participating in inspections, staff evaluations, and implementing new testing procedures. Work schedule is Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with possible travel and additional responsibilities as outlined.
