Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. The program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after review of the application.

Qualifications

Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited in accordance with VA Policy.
• Education: A bachelor's degree or higher in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or related sciences (e.g., chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, immunology) from an accredited institution.
• English Language Proficiency: Proficiency in spoken and written English as per 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).

Certification:

• Must meet one of the certification options below:
• Generalist certification by ASCP BOC or AMT.
• Generalist certification by ASCP BOR or AMT.
• Categorical or Specialist certification by ASCP or AMT.
• May qualify via the Grandfathering Provision if applicable.

Experience:

• Creditable Experience: Experience that required knowledge, skills, and abilities of current CLS practices, paid or unpaid, excluding research lab experience.
• Part-Time Experience: Creditable proportionally based on hours worked.
• Quality of Experience: Must be comparable to CLS experience at the next lower grade level, with higher-level duties performed at least 25% of the time for above FPL roles.

Grade Determinations:

For GS-12 Supervisory CLS, one year of creditable experience at GS-11 level is required, including performing, evaluating, and interpreting laboratory procedures across various specialties, and supervising staff.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of federal/state laws, regulations, and accreditation standards.
• Knowledge of laboratory quality management.
• Skills in leadership, interpersonal relations, and conflict resolution.
• Ability to supervise, organize, plan, and manage resources and budgets.

Preferred Experience:

Supervisory experience.

Physical Requirements:

Moderate lifting, standing, walking, use of fingers, visual and auditory acuity, and ability to work in noisy environments and irregular hours.
