In this role, you’ll primarily supervise associates in underwriting or underwriting support positions. This involves supervising and coordinating the work activities of the team, including customer service and workflow management. You’ll have opportunities to provide your technical expertise to ensure compliance to quality standards while developing and guiding the underwriting team. We’ll count on you to coordinate and complete underwriting projects, as well as developing, coaching, training and mentoring individual team members.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates and follows up on unit research efforts. Gathers information from multiple sources according to company guidelines, ensuring effective underwriting performance. May research issues supporting unit objectives and participate on committees or special projects.

  • Coordinates and follows up on analysis within the unit. Ensures that risks are handled within authority, based on company underwriting guidelines and standards. Analyzes quality and quantity of risks underwritten and utilizes reports accordingly. May perform portfolio analysis or additional underwriting analysis in support of unit objectives. Project coordinator for intake of all new portfolio management projects and provides the analysis on project viability or success.

  • Supervises, coordinates and provides leadership to unit. Ensures compliance to all time and service standards. Ensures file handling quality and workflow efficiency. Manages larger, more complex issues that require working with and through others to meet business needs and maximize workflow. Assists in managing work inventories within the unit.

  • Ensures that decisions to accept, modify or decline personal lines business are based on underwriting analysis, best practices and judgement within appropriate underwriting authority. Assigns work, monitors, evaluates and recommends resolution to escalated issues. May make decisions related to audit reviews and reports results to management.

  • Resolves escalated issues, applies underwriting expertise and provides technical oversight to complex issues.

  • Plans day-to-day work and procedures. Assists management in the development and monitoring of the unit's budget. Responsible for the management of associates including: performance management, salary planning and administration, hiring and placement, and disciplinary actions.

  • Consults on and performs file reviews as an underwriting subject matter expert with all levels of internal and external partners regarding policy and practice, customer service issues, sales, claims and product.

  • Communicates operational plans, direction and productivity results to direct reports. Communicates underwriting results to leadership.

  • Responsible for delivery of appropriate customer service levels within the team. Follows up and ensures proper handling of escalated customer service requests.

  • Coaches, develops and provides feedback to associates. Determines and ensures delivery of training and development based on individual and team needs.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Director. Direct reports: Typically, Specialists and below.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Bachelor's degree and pursuit of continued education preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: Pursuit of technical insurance coursework such as CPCU preferred.

Experience: Four years of experience in underwriting, customer service or related experience. Supervisory experience desired.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Detailed knowledge of state regulations, underwriting policies, procedures, and best practices. General understanding of company operations, financials, trend analysis to assist in the supervision of underwriting staff.

Strong verbal and written communication skills used to interact with all levels of internal and external contacts. Ability to supervise/lead, train associates in all aspects of personal lines underwriting. Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing situations. Ability to set work priorities that conform to established standards. Ability to analyze insurance risks, apply logical judgment and utilize procedures effectively. Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions and apply critical thinking skills. Skilled in Excel and other analytical tools to evaluate data.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.

Overtime Eligibility: Exempt (Not Eligible).

Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Occasional travel may be required to visit agencies or attend meetings. Extended or non-standard work hours as required to meet business need.
