Job summary

Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) is seeking a Training & Development professional to ensure operators and supervisors have the skills for safe, efficient service and excellent customer care. You will handle training prep, scheduling, and tracking, while aligning with COTA's core values of safety, empowerment, accountability, teamwork and service.

Position Summary

Performs employee learning and development work assuring new and existing operators and transportation supervisors have the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and efficiently perform their duties as it relates to providing excellent customer service to the public and passengers. Responsible for training preparation including, logistics, materials, scheduling and tracking. Performs cross-functional training assignments to meet business needs. Performs duties that advance COTA's Strategic Plan and reflect the organization's core values of safety, empowerment, accountability, teamwork, and service, and support the mission of Moving Every Life Forward.

Essential Job Functions
  • Provides training for new and existing Operators, including Flex Operators, on the daily operation of all areas of the transit system, ensuring compliance with city, local, state, and federal laws governing transit services;
  • Facilitates new student operator training in all areas of Transportation; both instructor led and on-the-road, COTA customer service techniques, CDL test preparation, emergency procedures, ADA, pre-trip inspections, safe-driving methods and transportation technology including CAD/AVL and fare box operation, tracks progress of all students;
  • Leads, evaluates, and coaches assigned learners, achieving maximum productivity and high employee morale;
  • Monitors operator performance through observation of live service. Provides verbal and/or written feedback and coaching through written and verbal coaching sessions;
  • Partners with the Talent Acquisition team to conduct briefing meetings and interviews for potential employees;
  • Demonstrates independent knowledge of COTA's service area, applicable traffic laws, policies, procedures, and union contract;
  • Assists in the development of new and revised learning and development programs for operators, supervisors and operations employees;
  • Enforces COTA policies, procedures, and employee attendance. Initiates discipline procedures through the application of the union contract/policy manual as it pertains to bus operations activities. Provides documentation to the respective transportation leader as required;
  • Supervises and provides leadership for their new operators. Trains, develops, and appraises learners effectively. Ensures the organization meets its EEO responsibilities by assisting in identifying problem areas, participating in local minority organizations, participating in review of complaints alleging discrimination, and supporting career counseling for employees. Takes corrective action as necessary, on a timely basis, and in accordance with policy;
  • Makes recommendations to management to improve operations, stream-line work processes, and works cooperatively and jointly with other departments to provide customer service; and
  • Assists in tracking and measuring training programs and tie back to the strategic goals of the organization.
  • Regular, predictable and punctual attendance required;
  • Must be willing to work any shift and day as required; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education & Experience Required
  • Requires an Associate's degree, and four (4) years of supervisory, coaching, mentoring, and/or transportation leadership experience. An equivalent combination of education and training experience will also be considered.
Licenses & Certifications
  • Must possess, or have the ability to obtain, a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Airbrake & Passenger endorsements; and
  • Must have the ability to obtain TSI certification, if applicable.
