Job summary

Children's Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI, is seeking a Surgical Services Supervisor to organize and direct the daily workflow of the surgical technologists. This is a full time, salaried on-site position located at our main hospital campus in Milwaukee, WI. Average schedule will be Monday-Friday from 7a-3:30p CST, but occasional night/weekend coverage may be required.

Job Summary

Responsible for organizing and directing the daily workflow of the surgical technologists. Create schedules and monitors quality and equipment performance in the Operating Room. Communicates with staff, peers, perioperative leadership team and medical staff regarding patient care issues and concerns. Spends 70% of the time in clinical shifts and 30% of the time in administrative/leadership, recognizing that at least 10% of the time in the clinical shifts is spent coaching, mentoring, and developing staff.

Essential Functions
  • Supervises Technologists and assists in staff scheduling. Maintains open lines of communication with the staff through high visibility and accessibility. Solves problems and addresses conflicts in an effective manner. Verifies accuracy of employee timesheets.
  • Trains staff on new processes, equipment, hospital and department policies.
  • Communicates with and works collaboratively with surgery leaders to achieve continuity and consistency of information, performance, productivity, and communication among all shifts. Recommends changes, reports issues or problematic trends, assesses staff morale, and implements strategies to support the department mission.
  • Provides education and quality control for surgical technologists in the OR in regard to equipment, sterile technique and managing supplies for all service lines.
  • Maintains staff compliance with state requirements, AORN standards as well as regulatory requirements in the OR.
  • Works effectively with the providers to address their clinical and support needs.
  • Promotes and assists with quality improvement including prioritization of projects, data collection, and process change facilitation.
  • Provides input for projected personnel and equipment needs and provides input into the development of the surgery budget.
  • Performs human resources responsibilities for staff which includes coaching on performance, completes performance reviews and overall staff morale. Recommends hiring, terminations, compensation changes, promotions, corrective action decisions, and terminations.
  • Responsible for understanding and adhering to the Children's Organizational Code of Ethics and for ensuring that personal actions, and the actions of employees supervised, comply with the policies, regulations and laws applicable to Children's business.

Education
  • Associate's Degree Graduate from a CAAHEP accredited two-year Associate's degree surgical technology program Required
Experience
  • 2+ years of operating room or special procedures as a surgical technologist in order to obtain knowledge of policies and procedures and proficiency in performing the role Required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Understands and satisfies the needs of the neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and adult patient in regards to their growth and development process.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with providers and other department personnel and coworkers in order to ensure quality patient care and present positive department and interdepartmental cooperation.
Licenses and Certifications
  • BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council required
  • CST-Certified Surgical Technologist - The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting required
Patient Care Responsibility
  • Provides care appropriate to patient population and as described in applicable policies and procedures
