Job summary

Chippenham Hospital in Virginia is seeking a Supervisory Respiratory Therapist to lead the respiratory care team during shifts. The role involves directing staff, coordinating workloads, and ensuring high-quality patient care in a busy department.

Requirements include a CRT with NBRC credentials, Virginia licensure, and BLS. Preferred are a BS/RT, management coursework, and additional certifications. Excellent teamwork and communication are essential.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Maintains CPR certificate.
• Maintains license requirements.
• Maintains NBRC credentials for Certified or Registered Respiratory Therapist.
• Assists with planning, coordination and supervision of the Respiratory technical staff during the scheduled shift.
• Assigns workload and monitors clinical staff daily.
• Develops work schedule for area of supervision.
• Takes call and provides technical support for respiratory staff and emergency coverage.
• Performs routine and emergency patient care as needed.
• Acts as consultant for patient care concerns and liaises between staff, nurses, and physicians.
• Supervises staff orientation and onboarding.
• Demonstrates understanding of blood gas machines operation and troubleshooting.
• Participates in staff performance appraisals and counseling.
• Shares responsibility for logging payroll hours into KRONOS.
• Assists in ongoing staff inservice program and CQI programs.
• Assists with policy/procedure development and Therapist Driven Protocols.
• Performs basic operations on Meditech system.
• Orders departmental operational supplies.
• Performs arterial puncture and blood gas analysis.
• Performs intubations as part of Code Blue team.
• Educates and monitors staff to reflect current policies and standards.

Job Summary And Qualifications

JOB SUMMARY: Provides direction and assistance for employees in the Respiratory Care Department while working on a given shift. May also provide direction and oversight to one or more of the following specialty areas: Sleep Disorders Center, Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program, NICU, or NICU/PICU.

SPECIFIC ELEMENTS AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS(*)

• Assists with planning, coordination and supervision of the Respiratory technical staff during the scheduled shift. May also provide direction and oversight to one or more of the following specialty areas: Sleep Disorders Center, Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program, NICU, or NICU/PICU.
• Assigns work load and monitors clinical staff on a daily basis. Documents when necessary any variations that occur from established policy and procedure.
• Develops work schedule for area of supervision. Monitors schedule on a daily basis to maximize/minimize staffing to meet patient care needs.
• Takes call, providing technical support for respiratory staff, emergency staff coverage and problem solving.
• Performs routine and emergency patient care services as needed to meet departmental needs.
• Acts as consultant for patient care concerns from staff, nursing and physicians. Acts as liaison between staff, nurses and physicians.
• Supervises and participates in the process of new employee orientation.
• Demonstrates understanding of the operation and maintenance of the blood gas machines by solving moderate to complex operational problems.
• Participates in staff level employee appraisal process and provides employee feedback and counseling as needed.
• *Shares responsibility for logging payroll hours into the KRONOS system.
• Assists in an ongoing staff inservice program.
• Assists with departmental CQI program and provides input into the yearly review of departmental policies and procedures.
• Assists with development, establishment and implementation of policy and procedures, including Therapist Driven Protocols.
• Performs basic operations and troubleshooting procedures on the Meditech system.
• *Responsible for ordering departmental operational supplies.
• Performs arterial puncture and blood gas analysis.
• Performs intubations as needed as a member of the Code Blue team.
• **Educates, monitors, documents, and assures therapists’ clinical practice reflects current policies and procedures pertaining to the departmental standard of practice.
• **Educates, monitors, documents, and assures therapists’ clinical practice reflects new and updated policies and procedures, and other changes to standards of practice.
• **Instructs and encourages individual staff in the pursuit of increasing excellence in clinical skills, critical thinking, and workflow efficiency.
• **Initiates and promotes projects/programs that further the development of the departmental scope of practice and standard of care.

What qualifications you will need:

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

EXPERIENCE:

Required: Minimum of two years critical care experience.

Preferred: Two years of supervisory experience in an active department.

One year management experience.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

Required: Virginia Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner

Maintain NBRC credentials for Certified or Registered Respiratory Therapist

BLS Course Certification

Preferred: Registered Respiratory Therapist

Current NRP, PALS, ACLS certifications
