What You’ll Do

The Supervisor, Payroll is a key operational leader responsible for overseeing accurate, timely, compliant payroll processing and ensuring a strong control environment across assigned payroll operations. This role provides hands-on leadership to the payroll team, serves as an escalation point for complex payroll matters, and is accountable for ensuring established payroll procedures, validations, approvals, and controls are consistently executed. The Supervisor is expected to bring strong payroll knowledge, sound judgment, attention to detail, and a high level of ownership. This position plays a critical role in identifying and mitigating payroll risk, investigating issues, ensuring appropriate corrective actions are implemented, and maintaining a strong employee service experience. The role requires a leader who understands that payroll is both a financially sensitive business process and an employee-facing service function, where accuracy, timeliness, controls, communication, and customer service are equally important.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead by example and establish clear expectations for accuracy, accountability, professionalism, customer service, and adherence to payroll procedures and controls.
  • Provide coaching, performance feedback, and development while holding team members accountable for individual and team results.
  • Oversee assigned payroll operations to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant processing, including appropriate validation of critical processes, controls, approvals, and reconciliations.
  • Serve as an escalation point for complex payroll issues; investigate discrepancies, identify root causes, and implement appropriate corrective actions.
  • Maintain sound judgment and composure during high-pressure payroll situations and ensure risks, errors, or control failures are escalated and addressed with transparency and urgency.
  • Promote a culture of ownership, collaboration, continuous improvement, and strong employee service, ensuring payroll inquiries and escalations are handled with professionalism, accuracy, urgency, and follow-through.
  • Partner with Human Resources, Finance, Benefits, HRIS, Treasury, and other stakeholders to resolve payroll matters and support business initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen controls, reduce risk, improve processes, and increase payroll efficiency.
  • Support payroll system enhancements, testing, audits, and maintenance of payroll procedures and training materials.
Education & Credentials

Associate’s degree in business or related field; or a combination of post high school and equal experience may be substituted for education. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Experience
  • Required: Minimum 5 years of progressive payroll experience, including hands-on experience supporting complex payroll operations.
  • Minimum 3 years of direct people leadership or payroll supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing payroll controls, reconciliations, audits, payment/funding validation, exception management, and payroll issue resolution.
  • Experience managing high-volume and/or multi-state payroll environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to investigate payroll discrepancies, perform root-cause analysis, and implement sustainable corrective actions.
  • Demonstrated experience handling sensitive employee payroll matters and escalations with professionalism and a strong customer-service orientation.
  • Preferred: Experience with Oracle Cloud Payroll, ADP, or comparable enterprise payroll/HRIS platforms.
  • Experience supporting union, complex pay arrangements, multiple payroll populations, or geographically dispersed employee groups.
  • CPP certification or equivalent payroll certification.
  • Experience participating in payroll transformation, system implementation, automation, or process improvement initiatives.
Technical Skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Outlook, Word and PowerPoint.
Other
