Job summary

Interstate Waste Services, Inc. is seeking a seasoned MRF Operations Supervisor to lead daily recycling plant operations with a focus on safety, efficiency and regulatory compliance.

You will direct a diverse team, oversee sorting, processing and shipments, and implement continuous improvements in a fast-paced industrial setting. The role requires 5+ years in related fields, a relevant degree or equivalent experience, and strong leadership, analytics and bilingual Spanish abilities.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years in transportation, logistics, or solid waste ops; MRF experience preferred.
• Associate degree or (HS diploma + 3 years relevant work experience) required.
• Bilingual Spanish preferred; union environment experience a plus.
• Proven leadership, coaching, and staff development capabilities.
• Data-driven approach to decision making and continuous improvement.
• Experience implementing OSHA safety programs and equipment specs.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily MRF operations including intake, sorting, processing and outbound shipments.
• Execute action plans from operations leadership to meet short and long-term goals.
• Lead continuous improvement projects to boost efficiency and productivity.
• Coordinate with maintenance on schedules to optimize performance.
• Ensure safety and regulatory compliance (OSHA and other standards).
• Manage department staffing, scheduling, overtime, coaching, and evaluations.
• Address employee relations and labor relations issues with functional groups.
• Adapt to changing shift schedules, including overnight/weekend shifts.
• Collaborate with transportation teams for inbound/outbound material flows.
• Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions.
• Foster a safe, productive, positive work environment.

The MRF Operations Supervisor supports the Manager of Site Operations by directing the day-to-day operations of a Materials Recovery Facility, ensuring efficient processing of recyclable materials while maintaining safety, environmental compliance, and operational excellence. This role requires strong leadership skills to manage diverse teams and complex sorting operations in a fast-paced industrial environment.

• Oversee daily MRF operations including material intake, sorting, processing, and outbound shipments
• Responsible for executing action plans developed by operations leadership to deliver both short-term and long-term site performance results
• Lead continuous improvement projects to increase efficiency and productivity
• Collaborate with the maintenance department on maintenance schedules to ensure the site is running at optimum performance
• Responsible to ensure all necessary precautions to ensure safety and compliance with Company OSHA, and other standards and regulations
• Oversees personnel needs of the department to include but not limited to managing staff levels (scheduling and overtime allocation), coaching, disciplining, training, and evaluating employee performance
• Works with functional groups to resolve employee relations and labor relations issues
• Must be able to work a changing shift schedule to oversee all facets of the operations when they are occurring. Episodic overnight and weekend shifts are necessary.
• Coordinate with transportation teams for inbound and outbound material flows
• Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence
• Foster a positive work environment focused on safety and productivity

• Minimum of 5 years of work experience in transportation, logistics, or solid waste operations. Previous experience overseeing a MRF preferred.
• Associate’s degree (accredited) or in lieu of degree, high school diploma or GED (accredited) and 3 years of relevant work experience
• Bilingual Spanish preferred
• Experience in a unionized environment
• Proven leadership skills in coaching and leading employees
• Demonstrated ability to use a data-driven analytical approach to decision making
• Experience implementing safety (OSHA) programs and equipment specifications
• Proven ability to work efficiently with minimal direct supervision
• Demonstrated ability to motivate others to achieve results
