Description:

The Supervisor of Phlebotomy will conduct Phlebotomy and provide the administrative support to the Phlebotomy program throughout the University of Illinois Hospital and Healthcare Institution to achieve an effective and efficient phlebotomy service with an emphasis on quality patient care and high patient satisfaction. The Supervisor of Phlebotomy will supervise Phlebotomists throughout the UI Health sites, including evaluating their work performance, establishing workflows, assigning work, scheduling vacation, coordinate training, and setting work schedules. They will be responsible for the maintenance of supplies, records, and reports. Perform related duties as assigned.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supervises Phlebotomists, including evaluating their work performance, assigning work, scheduling vacation, and setting work schedules.
  • Make decisions as to the completeness of specimens/specimen requests.
  • Perform manual computer procedures for test requesting, cancelling, or crediting tests ordered and verifying billing information. Prioritize and organize work.
  • Perform Phlebotomy on patients of all ages.
  • Responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of laboratory tests and analyses.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and operation of laboratory equipment and the maintenance of supplies, records, and reports.
  • Develops, performs, and teaches new and revised clinical laboratory procedures.
  • Assists in coordinating training for staff and students, as needed.
  • Performs clinical laboratory work involving a high degree of skill and statistical analysis of data as required.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required:

1. Any one or any combination of the following, totaling six (6) years (72 months), from the categories below:

A. college training with a major in biological sciences or closely related field

  • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
  • 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
  • Bachelor’s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)

B. progressively responsible work experience in a clinical pathology facility which must include: hematology, urinalysis, fecal analysis, clinical chemistry, exfoliative cytology, anatomic pathology and any other ancillary procedure.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least three year experience in phlebotomy in a medical laboratory environment.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Able to draw venipuncture’s on all patient types (geriatric, pediatric)
  • Knowledge of tube types, specimen requirements and processing guidelines.
  • Possess adequate skills related to computer functions including computer language and typing.
  • Knowledge of special handling of specimens performed at our laboratory or at one of our reference laboratories.
  • Follow laboratory guidelines when sorting specimens to ensure proper labeling.
  • Understand and maintain work flow to ensure timeliness of results and problem resolutions.
  • Know correct procedures (Universal precautions) for handling possible infectious substances.
  • Able to identify all area of the laboratory, e.g., Chemistry, Blood Bank, Microbiology, etc.
  • Able to follow all safety, shipping and handling instructions for specimens.
  • Exhibit professional attitude when working with internal as well as external customers.
  • Able to identify problems and bring them to appropriate manager for documentation and resolution.
  • Knowledge of special handling of specimens performed at our laboratory or at one of our reference laboratories.
  • Follow laboratory guidelines when sorting specimens to ensure proper labeling.
  • Able to maintain adequate inventory of supplies needed in the phlebotomy area, printers and client supplies.
  • Know correct procedures (Universal precautions) for handling possible infectious substances.
