Description
GENERAL SUMMARY
Under general supervision and following established policies, procedures, and professional guidelines, the supervisor assesses laboratory operations as needed for on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation. The role is responsible for the day-to-day supervision or oversight of laboratory operations and personnel performing testing and reporting results. Responsible for leading or performing routine and specialized technical analyses; operating and maintaining instrumentation according to established laboratory procedures and protocols; monitoring test performance; performing and documenting all quality control associated with tests. Exercises independent judgment in recognizing and solving test-related problems. Specific test procedures vary depending on the laboratory section assigned. With the section manager, the supervisor interviews, hires, schedules, provides orientation, evaluates, assesses competency, and, when necessary, disciplines and recommends disciplinary actions and discharge of staff. Acts as a resource to staff for resolving technically difficult problems with tests or equipment and assists with customer issues staff cannot resolve. Ensures remedial actions are taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications. Performs duties in accordance with the mission, vision, and values of Tampa General Hospital. Leads or performs technical duties as specified in CAP regulations. Responsible for personnel performing high-complexity testing according to CLIA 88 regulations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or a related field, with training completed in an NACCLS-approved program.
- Must meet and maintain qualifications for personnel performing high-complexity testing as per CLIA 88 regulations.
- One-year training period and on-the-job training required.
- Current Florida Licensure as a Medical Technologist. Supervisor license and ASCP certification preferred.
