Job summary

Sanford Health is seeking an experienced laboratory leader to oversee pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical testing activities across the department.

You will collaborate with department leadership to maintain quality, safety, and regulatory standards while managing staff, budgets, and performance initiatives. Travel to enterprise locations may be required as part of the role.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in laboratory or biological sciences required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Two years of laboratory related experience required.
  • National laboratory certification or laboratory specialty certification through an approved Health and Human Services agency (e.g., ASCP); or registry eligible.
  • Licensing requirements may apply if working in North Dakota and not a cytotechnologist/histotechnologist.
  • Maintenance of continuing education credits as required for license and certifications.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of testing.
  • Follows SOPs and ensures laboratory safety, quality and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide leadership during day-to-day operations of the laboratory or multiple laboratories.
  • Act as point of contact to technical staff and provide direction.
  • Serve as a resource to health care personnel and collaborate across the enterprise.
  • Manage validations, proficiency testing, evaluation and QA initiatives.
  • Prepare documents and hold meetings related to performance appraisals and corrective action.
  • Recruit and hire new staff; interview, counsel, discipline, and terminate as needed.
  • Develop indicators for quality and continuous improvement; monitor budgets and finances.
  • Oversee HR, budget, finance, and planning; ensure regulatory compliance and organizational standards.
  • Provide professional and technical expertise; uphold the organization’s vision.
  • May travel to other enterprise locations as needed.

Work closely and collaborate with the department medical director/section director and other department leadership to oversee areas of responsibility. May have fiscal responsibility for areas of accountability. This position may require acting as a CLIA role of Qualified Laboratory Director, Technical Supervisor and Technical Consultant as needed. Must also qualify to perform duties delegated by the CLIA Laboratory Director. May be required to travel to other enterprise locations. Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • If working in North Dakota (ND) and not a cytotechnologist or histotechnologist, must be licensed or have a provisional license, by the ND Board of Clinical Laboratory Practice.
  • Certification is not required when clinical lab testing is not performed by the team.
  • Maintain continuing education credits equivalent to the state requirements as needed for license and certifications.
  • May be required to have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
