Job summary

Westinghouse Electric Company in Warrendale, PA is seeking an experienced engineering leader to head the I&C Safety Systems Software Tools and Automation group. You will guide a team responsible for software tools, automation frameworks, simulation environments, documentation automation, DevOps infrastructure, and engineering productivity solutions that support safety-critical software development.

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of professional software development experience, including demonstrated technical leadership responsibilities.
  • Experience leading, supervising, mentoring, or coordinating the work of software engineers, automation engineers, or technical contributors.
  • Strong experience developing software applications using C# and Microsoft .NET technologies.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps, Git-based source control, work item management, build pipelines, release pipelines, dashboards, and software development lifecycle workflows.
  • Experience developing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, software build automation, test automation, and engineering workflow automation solutions.
  • Experience creating and managing NuGet packages, shared software components, internal libraries, or reusable development frameworks.

About The Role

You will serve as a first-line engineering leader within the I&C Safety Systems Software Tools and Automation Organization, responsible for leading a team that develops and maintains software tools, automation frameworks, simulation environments, documentation automation capabilities, DevOps infrastructure, and engineering productivity solutions that support safety-critical digital I&C software development.

This role combines people leadership, resource management, hands‑on software development, technical direction, and process improvement. You will have direct reports within the Software Tools and Automation team and will be responsible for building team capability, assigning work, supporting employee development, managing priorities, and ensuring the team delivers high-quality solutions that improve software development efficiency, quality, traceability, and maintainability.

You will also serve as a hands‑on technical leader, contributing to the architecture, design, development, testing, and deployment of software tools and automation solutions. The role requires strong experience with C#, .NET, Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, NuGet packages, reusable software libraries, automated testing frameworks, simulation environments, and integration of engineering tools across the software development lifecycle.

A key focus of this position is improving how safety software is developed, tested, documented, released, and maintained. You will lead initiatives to automate engineering workflows, improve Azure DevOps usage, support simulation‑based testing, streamline documentation generation, improve traceability, and reduce manual effort across the software lifecycle.

You will work closely with software engineering leads, project managers, systems engineers, verification and validation teams, quality assurance, licensing, and other stakeholders to align tools and automation strategy with project needs and organizational priorities.

You will report to the Manager, I&C Safety Software and will be located in a hybrid role at the Warrendale, PA facility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and supervise the I&C Safety Systems Software Tools and Automation team, including direct reports responsible for software tools, automation, DevOps, simulation, testing infrastructure, and engineering productivity solutions.
  • Manage team workload, priorities, resource assignments, schedule commitments, and delivery expectations across multiple projects and organizational initiatives.
  • Support hiring, onboarding, mentoring, coaching, performance feedback, career development, and technical growth of team members.
  • Build and sustain team capability in C#/.NET development, Azure DevOps, automation, simulation, software testing tools, documentation automation, and software lifecycle support.
  • Provide hands‑on technical leadership for the design, development, testing, and maintenance of engineering tools, utilities, frameworks, applications, and services.
  • Develop software solutions using C#, .NET, and related technologies to improve engineering productivity, automation, software quality, and lifecycle efficiency.
  • Create and maintain reusable software libraries, shared frameworks, internal development platforms, and NuGet packages used across multiple safety software projects.
  • Lead development and improvement of Azure DevOps solutions, CI/CD pipelines, build automation, source control workflows, work item structures, dashboards, and reporting capabilities.
  • Develop and support simulation environments, test harnesses, automated testing frameworks, and integration tools that enable earlier defect detection and more efficient software verification.
  • Lead automation initiatives throughout the software development lifecycle, including automated generation of requirements, design, verification, traceability, metrics, release, and compliance documentation.
  • Develop integrations between engineering tools, repositories, test systems, requirements systems, configuration management systems, and documentation platforms to improve data consistency and reduce manual effort.
  • Partner with project teams and technical leads to identify process gaps, tooling needs, automation opportunities, and areas where software development practices can be improved.
  • Support software configuration management, traceability, reporting, release management, and lifecycle documentation activities through improved tools and automation.
  • Establish technical direction, architecture standards, coding practices, and maintainability expectations for tools and automation solutions developed by the team.
  • Review technical designs, code, test approaches, and implementation plans to ensure solutions are robust, maintainable, secure, and aligned with organizational needs.
  • Support resolution of complex technical issues involving software integration, build systems, automation failures, simulation environments, development tools, and engineering workflows.
  • Collaborate with software development, verification and validation, quality assurance, licensing, project management, and other stakeholders to deploy solutions that support regulated safety software development.
  • Drive continuous improvement of software engineering processes, tool usage, documentation practices, testing approaches, and development workflows.
  • Communicate team status, risks, resource needs, priorities, and technical recommendations to Safety Software management and project stakeholders.

We are committed to transparency and equity in all of our people practices. The base salary range for this position, which is dependent upon experience, qualifications and skills, is estimated to be $116,800 to $146,000 per year.
