  • Responsible for providing day to day supervision of department operations according to established policies and procedures and at the direction of the Lab Manager.
  • Checks validity and accuracy of test results obtained by staff.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Assists in the calibration and standardization of lab instruments.
  • Supervises high complexity test performance by staff qualified under 493.1489.
  • Provides on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation to resolve technical problems.
  • On-site supervision when high complexity testing is performed by individuals under 493.1489(b)(5) with reviews within 24 hours by a supervisor.
  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work to ensure timely, accurate service.
  • Audits staff work to ensure quality across duties.
  • Monitors test analyses and specimen examinations to maintain analytic performance.
  • Ensures staff meets daily and monthly productivity levels.
  • Assists manager in evaluating performance and developing corrective actions.
  • Performs MT functions as needed in Blood Bank testing.
  • Prepares specimens for diagnostic testing with proper preservatives and storage.
  • Determines acceptability of specimens and documents unsuitable samples.
  • Performs and reports laboratory tests in a timely manner.
  • Resolves complaints or operational problems on any shift.
  • Collaborates in a customer-focused, compliant work environment.
  • Maintains records and participates in updating procedures and quality control manuals.
  • Maintains equipment and supplies; reports malfunctions and keeps a clean, safe environment.
  • Uses LIS and Blood Bank systems to enter and retrieve results.
  • Maintains confidentiality per HIPAA and compliance policies.
  • Completes required training and participates in performance improvement activities.
  • Completes proficiency surveys to meet regulatory standards.
  • Involves in orientation, training and supervision of new staff and students.

Job description

Under the direction of the Laboratory Director and supervision of the Laboratory Manager, provides day to day supervision of testing personnel and reporting of test results. Assists in coordinating and directing the daily operations and activities of assigned area(s). Performs various laboratory tests and procedures and reports results. In the absence of the Director and Manager, the General Supervisor Technologist works effectively with others in the implementation of patient care activities through communication, cooperation and collaboration.

What You Will Do
  • Responsible for providing day to day supervision of daily operations and activities of the department according to established policies and procedures and at the direction of the Lab Manager. * Checks validity and accuracy of test results obtained by staff. * Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and equipment. * Assists in the calibration and standardization of lab instruments. * Responsible for supervision of high complexity test performance by testing personnel qualified under 493.1489. * Must be accessible to testing personnel at all times testing is performed to provide on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation to resolve technical problems in accordance with policies and procedures established either by the Laboratory Medical Director or Laboratory Administrative Director. * Must be on-site to provide direct supervision when high complexity testing is performed by any individuals qualified under 493.1489(b)(5), except those who were performing high complexity on or before January 19, 1993, the requirements of paragraph 493.1489(a)(3) of this section are not effective, provided that all high complexity testing performed by the individual in the absence of a General Supervisor is reviewed within 24 hours by a General Supervisor qualified under 493.1461.
  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews the work of section staff to ensure that required work is completed, and adequate service is provided in an accurate and efficient manner. * Effectively makes work assignments/schedules, delegates responsibilities, sets priorities and redirects employees to other tasks as the need arises. * Oversees the work of personnel and instructs them in the implementation of department operations, policies and procedures. * Audits work of staff to ensure quality in all job duties. Is responsible for monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained. * Ensures staff meets daily and monthly productivity levels. * Assists manager in evaluating employees’ performance assuring that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications. * Assists manager in developing corrective actions.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills to perform Medical Technologist (MT) functions and activities as needed. * Performs test for assigned lab area(s) within the Blood Bank. * Prepares samples obtained for laboratory diagnostic testing by using the appropriate preservative, anticoagulant, or storage conditions specified for the requested test procedures. * Determines acceptability of specimens by performing visual inspections, or by recognizing abnormal/unusual results. Documents unacceptable specimens according to appropriate policy. * Performs and completes laboratory tests and reports in a timely manner.
  • Resolves complaints, conflicts or operational problems (on any shift). Informs manager of any problems or issues that cannot be resolved or requires further attention.
  • Interacts and works collaboratively in a customer responsive and courteous manner in compliance with standards of conduct and promoting patient/customer satisfaction.
  • Prepares and maintains required records, reports, and files for administrative and compliance purposes. Participates in updating of procedure and quality control manuals. Adhere to established department policies, procedures, objectives, compliance and quality improvement and quality assurance with consideration given to risk management, infection control and patient safety practices.
  • Maintains equipment, instruments and supplies. Reports malfunction of equipment to manager. Maintains a clean, orderly, safe environment for patients and personnel. Assists in the evaluation of new or modified techniques and methods.
  • Utilizes Laboratory Information System (LIS) and the Blood Bank system to enter and retrieve lab results.
  • Maintains confidentiality in matters relating to patient/family, department and hospital information. Adhere to established department and organizational policies (i.e. HIPAA, Confidentiality, and Compliance Policies).
  • Completes required training and education, including department specific requirements. Responds to problems/opportunities to improve work environment and participates in unit based performance improvement activities which includes committees, monitoring and follow-up.
  • Completes proficiency surveys to ensure that requirements and standards are met in accordance with all regulatory agencies.
  • Participates in the orientation, training and supervision of new staff members and students that perform laboratory testing as part of their training.
