Job Responsibilities
Receives and processes specimens, components and/or requisitions: Receives, prioritizes, and processes specimens in a timely manner to meet or exceed turnaround time standards.
Verifies specimen identification and labeling.
Determines if specimen is acceptable for analysis.
Identifies discrepancies, resolves, and documents for quality assurance.
Willingly assists other employees in the department during times of high-volume testing.
BB Only: Determines if specimen collection is required.
Performs and documents blood component processing according to established procedures.
As requested, provides appropriate platelet and plasma components.
Documents special component needs in transfusion service information systems (TSIS).
Reviews and confirms recipient and donor information at the time of blood component issue.
Maintains adequate blood component inventory and uses the inventory effectively.
Performs testing according to established procedures: organizes work for maximum efficiency, maintaining efficiency during stressful situations.
Demonstrates knowledge of technical and instrumental procedures.
Performs testing according to established procedure. Identifies absurd results and repeats tests as needed.
Maintains a clean, uncluttered work area. Uses required personal protective equipment and physical barriers.
Works independently with minimal supervision and uses time efficiently when work is completed.
Reviews specimen logs for unreceived specimens.
BB Only: Performs patient and component testing according to established procedures.
Uses TSIS efficiently to record testing results and comments.
