Job summary

Mercy Cedar Rapids is seeking an experienced EVS Leader to guide the Environmental Services department on the 2nd shift. You will oversee day-to-day operations, scheduling, training, and performance of EVS staff to ensure a clean, safe, and patient-centered environment across Mercy facilities.

You will collaborate with nursing leadership, infection control, and house staff to align service delivery with Mercy’s standards.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to speak, read, and write in fluent English.
  • Minimum of three years’ EVS/Housekeeping experience.
  • Previous lead/charge/supervisory experience preferred.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day EVS operations for assigned shift, including scheduling and staff mentoring.
  • Coordinate training, maintain employee records, and assist in disciplinary actions.
  • Order supplies and oversee performance against quality standards.
  • Represent EVS in committees and meetings; cover for EVS Manager as needed.

Summary

This position supports Mercy’s philosophy of patient centered care by providing day to day leadership to the Environmental Services Department (EVS). The duties include planning, scheduling, cleanliness, safety, and patient satisfaction. This position also encompasses day to day interactions with nurse managers, directors, house supervisors, infection control, and EVS/Linen staff to compliment the perfect patient experience.

Job Duties
  • Maintains knowledgeregarding biohazard waste, pharmacy waste, chemo waste, and sharps disposal as well asknowledge of cleaning supplies and equipment.
  • Handles and manages the day-to-day operations of EVS for his/her assigned shift to include proper work assignments, proper scheduling, new employee training, maintenance of accurate employee records, and offers assistance in discipline, including terminations.
  • Initiates all supply ordering, both stock and non-stock, and cross trains to cover this process.
  • Demonstrates, trains and practices safe work habits to EVS staff.
  • Demonstrates leadership skills by team building, patient satisfaction, planning and organizing.
  • Maintainsan acceptable level of quality and cleanliness that is measured through Press Ganey, HCAHPS survey results and internal audits. Ensures quality standards are met by periodic inspection and evaluation of assigned staff.
  • Manages vacation requests that do not compromise EVS staffing.
  • Assists the Director, EVS and EVS Manager as requested to represent the department for committees, meetings or special assignments. Fills in for Manager of EVS as needed.
  • Evaluates performance of assigned subordinates, including non-written 30- and 60-day, 90-day written and annual written reviews.
  • Reviews applications and initiates interview process, selects best candidates and begins the hiring process.
  • Maintains employee records that include training and orientation.
  • Follows hospital and department policies in a consistent and fair manner.
  • Operates work scheduling software that includes uploading schedules, clock adjustments, payroll and patient discharges.
  • Accountable for keys that are used each shift
  • Follows Mercy’s safety guidelines, carries out job- specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write in fluent English.
  • Basic math skills are important in this job.
  • Computer literacy includes proficiency in Microsoft software including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Must maintain neat appearance and professional image while at work.
  • The ability to use and demonstrate guest relation skills are extremely important in this position.
  • Must be a strong leader and able to communicate and listen effectively.
Professional Experience
  • Minimum of three years’ EVS/Housekeeping experience required. Previous lead/charge/supervisory experience preferred.
Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • College degree or specific course work preferred
