Job summary

Milton Hershey School (MHS) is seeking an experienced Supervisor, Commercial Operations to ensure safe, reliable operation of campus buildings on a 24/7/365 basis. The role covers central plant and large-scale systems, coordinating maintenance, and leading staff and contractors.

  • Associate degree in science, engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum five years of directly experience managing central power plant or complex facilities operations.
  • Experience supervising employees, contractors, maintenance activities, and critical building systems.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction and General Industry certificate.
  • Arc-flash safety training and CPR certification.

Responsibilities

  • Support planning, coordination, and supervision of operations for commercial buildings, Central Plant, and campus mini plants.
  • Oversee equipment serving scholastic and administrative facilities, including large-scale chilled-water, boiler, and electrical systems.
  • Coordinate maintenance with internal staff and outside contractors; inspect work for safety and quality.
  • Manage work requests, preventive maintenance schedules, and backlog in the CMMS.
  • Plan shutdowns and major repairs; monitor alarms and escalate issues.
  • Lead daily work assignments, training, performance evaluations, and policy compliance.
  • Support construction and renovation planning; assist with bids, quotes, and purchasing.
  • Ensure OSHA, life-safety, and plant-safety compliance.
  • Partner with campus teams to improve system performance and control utility costs.
  • Coordinate campus utility locates and after-hours operational response.

MHS is seeking an experienced Supervisor, Commercial Operations to provide dedicated, high-quality, reliable, safe, and efficient operation of our scholastic and administrative buildings on campus in an uninterrupted 24/7/365 basis model. Reporting to the Associate Director of Facilities, the Supervisor, Commercial Operations leads critical building-system operations, preventive and corrective maintenance, employee and contractor activities, and energy-focused initiatives that support uninterrupted service across campus. This role requires weekly on-call rotation (24 hours a day, 7 days per week) for maintenance and emergency situations. Standard hours of second shift operation: Monday – Friday 1:00 pm – 9:30 pm and may change due to seasonal and/or programmatic changes.

Key Responsibilities

Support the planning, coordination, and supervision of operations for commercial buildings, the Central Plant, and campus mini plants.

Oversee critical equipment serving scholastic and administrative facilities, including large-scale chilled-water, boiler, and electrical-distribution systems.

Coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance performed by internal employees and outside contractors; inspect completed work for safety, quality, and accuracy.

Manage work requests, preventive maintenance schedules, and backlog activity through the school’s computerized maintenance management system.

Plan shutdowns and major repairs, complete or verify daily inspections, monitor critical alarms, and escalate significant operational issues.

Lead daily work assignments, employee training, performance evaluations, conflict resolution, and compliance with school policies and procedures.

Support construction and renovation planning; assist with bids, vendor quotes, purchasing, work-order cost allocation, and inventory management.

Ensure compliance with OSHA, life-safety, and plant-safety requirements.

Partner with building automation, residential operations, mechanical trades, and energy-management teams to improve system performance and control utility costs.

Coordinate campus utility locates, mechanical support for campus events, and after-hours operational response as needed.

Skills for Success

Strong knowledge of physical plant operations, maintenance practices, and preventive maintenance program development.

Proficiency with building automation systems and computerized maintenance management software.

Effective leadership, communication, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to prioritize competing operational needs, make sound decisions, and maintain accurate records and reports.

Working knowledge of commonly used business and facilities software.

Qualifications:

Ability to respond to operational emergencies and share responsibility for after-hours maintenance and operations calls to support critical building systems to operate on an interrupted 24/7 basis.

  • Candidates should demonstrate a high degree of integrity as all MHS staff are considered to be role models for MHS students.
  • Candidates should be willing to actively engage with students.

Preferred

APPA supervisory training.

Experience with building automation systems, utilities, energy conservation, and large-scale HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire-alarm, and mechanical systems.
