Job summary

SteelSummit is seeking a Production Supervisor to lead a manufacturing team, uphold safety, quality, and efficiency, and report to the Plant Manager.

You will oversee daily production activities, coordinate scheduling, drive continuous improvement, and ensure 5S compliance while partnering with Quality, Maintenance, HR and Logistics.

Candidates should have proven supervisory experience in steel or industrial settings and a commitment to safety and teamwork.

Job Shift: Day

As a Production Supervisor at SteelSummit, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety, quality, and efficiency of our operations. Reporting directly to the Plant Manager, you will be responsible for leading and managing a team of production employees to achieve our production goals while upholding our Core Values and Standard Operating Procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Implement and enforce safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for all employees as defined in the Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Oversee day-to-day production activities, including scheduling, workflow management, and resource allocation, to meet production targets and customer deadlines. Coordinates the provision of scheduled material with the Material Handling personnel.
  • Conduct formal and informal layered process audits to verify the quality of work performed by production staff and ensure adherence to company standards. Notifies Plant Manager of safety or work rule violations.
  • Collaborate with other departments, such as Quality, Maintenance, Inside Sales, HR and Logistics, to resolve production issues and optimize workflow.
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of production employees to achieve performance targets and uphold safety standards utilizing Company SOPs. Evaluate the performance of assigned employees and determine training needs.
  • Identify areas for process improvement and implement corrective actions to enhance efficiency, productivity, and quality.
  • Monitor and analyze production metrics, such as productivity, downtime, and waste, to identify trends and implement performance improvements.
  • Ensure that direct report employees maintain effective housekeeping and 5S procedures to ensure that the plant is tour/audit-ready on any given day.
  • Investigate and document all employee incidents and near misses in accordance with company protocols. Additionally, administer first aid as required in adherence to safety standards. Enforces all company policies and rules, in conjunction with Plant Manager and HR.
  • Performs all delegated administrative and backup functions including timecards.
  • Distributes personal protective equipment, tools, miscellaneous work supplies, and requested forms to personnel, ensuring seamless access to necessary resources.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Proven experience in a supervisory role within a manufacturing or industrial environment, preferably in the steel industry.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate, coach, and develop teams to achieve operational excellence.
  • In-depth knowledge of production processes, equipment, and quality standards.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze complex issues and implement effective solutions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and production management software.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, integrity, and continuous improvement.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively at all levels of the organization.

Employees are standing/walking 100% of the time; lifting to 50 lbs. as needed; reading charts, tags, and written procedures; and printing or writing legibly to complete all required paperwork. Supervisors are also encouraged to qualify for a First Aid/CPR Certificate.

This person must be able to qualify for a forklift license; be able to use calipers, tape measure, micrometer, hand tools, crimpers, plasma cutter; and be able to operate an overhead crane.

This worksite is in the plant. The plant is on one level, accessible directly from the parking lot -- there are stairs only in the truck dock and rail siding. There are seasonal variations in temperatures from 60 to 95+ degrees; some exposure to diesel fumes as trucks move through the plant; noise level varies depending on the number of machines in operation. Potential hazards include cuts and crush injuries.

Supervision and/or co-worker assistance is always available. Unscheduled absences may result in failure to meet customer requirements due to insufficient staffing.

CONSEQUENCES IF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS NOT PERFORMED
  • Failure to observe safety procedures in material handling may result in serious injury up to fatality and/or damage and loss of material or property.
  • Failure to follow chart instructions may result in customer dissatisfaction or in unacceptable levels of scrap.
  • Failure to move material in a timely manner may result in production delays or customer delivery delays, which may in turn result in the loss of business.
  • Failure to complete appropriate paperwork may result in inventory shortage through loss of material or improper billing of the customer.
  • Improper storage of material may result in damage/loss of material.
