Job summary

The City of Yakima is seeking a dedicated public-service professional to lead the building codes division, partnering with the Building Official to guide municipal operations and support a high-performing, community-focused team.

In this supervisory role, you will oversee code compliance efforts, inspect projects, enforce state and local codes, and ensure safe, compliant construction throughout Yakima. Washington state licensure and a valid driver’s license are required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 5 years' building or fire code inspection and compliance enforcement experience.
  • 2 years’ lead or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must possess ICC Certified Building Official and Commercial/Residential Building Inspection Certificates.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Washington State Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and assist in planning, organizing, facilitating, and participating in Code Administration Division activities.
  • Direct supervision and coordination of the code compliance work unit.
  • Drive to inspection sites to ensure compliance with mechanical, plumbing, zoning, and municipal codes and state/federal laws.

The supervising Code Inspector performs supervisory and administrative work assisting the Code Administration Manager in planning, supervising, organizing, facilitating, and participating in the activities of the Code Administration Division. Responsible for direct supervision, coordination and execution of the duties and activities of the code compliance work unit. Drives to and inspects buildings and construction projects as necessary to ensure compliance with mechanical, plumbing, zoning, and municipal codes, and state, federal and other laws, rules and regulations.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or GED and five (5) years' building or fire code inspection and compliance enforcement experience. Two (2) years’ lead or supervisory experience is preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES

Must possess/maintain valid Certified Building Official, Commercial and Residential Building Inspection Certificates from the International Code Council or the International Conference of Building Officials at time of appointment. Must obtain/possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver’s License.
